Rallying call for all interested: Colonisation of the Moon mod!

Yeah, the scope of the timeframe is critical to how far the imagination can wander. Good point Mauritania.

I could imagine that at the beginning ther will be NO Combat unit as all are eager to colonize. The first combat unit should come a way later in the tech tree. This would make a completely different start. :)

I think the first combating units would be foot troops with normal rifles and infantry on moon cars, and melee troops. The "gunpowder" units should not be capable of taking cities or have a negativ city attack (because while storming most of the equipment would be destroyed so that these troops have to operate quite careful) Therfore we should have the hand to hand or taser troops to capture (these on the contrary have to be quite weak on the open field).

The situation might change when underground cities become availabe but even then motorized troops will not be well usable.

Further - later game - units might be troop carriers and moon-tanks and of course different styles of shuttles.

Artillery units should not be usable due to the small gravitation on moon.

Hmm. By the time we *can* build another moon, we probably won't actually *need* to because we'll have advanced so much.

I'd say keep things simple - say from present day (+20 years or so) to 2300. If we do it in terms of months (can we actually *have* months in this game?) that would give us between 280-ish and 3,200-ish turns to work with. We don't want it to last *too* long, do we?

I think things tend to get a bit bland the further on in the future you go.

In terms of combat - however you like it. Projectile weapons will be good, and as for beam weapons - well, one could use lasers to burn holes in armour/spacesuits. The goal in combat, though, would be either to disable or to destroy the enemy, and the customary way of doing that is to cause explosive decompression in whatever conveyance the enemy is travelling in.

Later on we could have computer virus weapons that can force units to skip turns.

Artillery might be useful after all, you know - what about self-propelling shells?

Also, once people start having the 'independence' civic we could have massive waves of 'barbarian' units - Earthbound nations trying to reclaim the colonies.

Does anyone know if it is possible to program in Civ II-style missile weapons? That'd be cool.

EDIT 1:
How about the first few units have no combat but other special abilities? That could result in a really diverse 'army' by the time the first brute-force unit comes along.

EDIT 2:
What do you guys think of the map, btw? Is it usable?

How about mind control? How far down the tech tree is that for combat?

And the "space" worker is in the unit section. He sort of does look like a stormtrooper...

And yes, Keep It Simple is a great way to begin this project. The ideas will come and be implemented more easily after people play the first simple version. Making it complicated and taking longer to get to the CFC wouldn't be good.

The space worker looks great! (better than I was expecting actually :hatsoff:)

Although you might want to add a little colour so he shows up against the grey Lunar dust.

HA! Just heard on the radio that a pilot whale has been seen swimming past the Houses of Parliament down the River Thames!

And a growing backbench rebellion in the government benches in Parliament will be fun too... :satan:

Sorry. Back on subject: is it possible to do similar reskins for gun-armed soldiers? The crossbelts on the chest of the rifleman unit could double as oxygen pipes...

I've been looking through the units and having a heckuva time thinking of which would look good in space...

If you make a list of what would work in this mod I'll certainly try. I'm thinking of Chewbacca's energy crossbow too. :)

But seriously, make a list of what you want to see and I'll try to suit them up.

The Irconclad could be made into something like a hoover-trooptransport don't you think?

And the maceman or a similar unit could be skinned into someone with an electro-club. (Weapon parts can be made invisible)

It might even be possible to use the beams of the mechanized inf for laser troops.

Okay... basically, anything mechanical (so mech.inf, tanks, &c) and anything with guns. If they've got weird hats then don't use them, but try and think what model could conceivably go into space. Some of the missionary units might work in space (well, the models, anyway...)

I'm currently working on flags. I've got symbols for all five space agencies and I'm working on the rest... Will post soon.

Is it possible to switch the colors of arrows and bolts?

I'll try to make some people less white. ;)

And JBG, have you looked into some of the mini mods out there to see what could be incorporated into this one? I'm thinking that the Tech capture mod would be cool where if you capture another faction's city you get a free tech (or a % chance) if they are ahead of you. I'm sure there are others as well that would work well and lessen your work.

I'll be sure to do that.

Here's some of the flags I'm working on:
Flag_1.JPG

Unknown organisation (possibly independent)

Flag_2a.JPG

ASEC variation 1 (Asian Space Exploration Consortium)

Flag_2b.JPG

ASEC variation 2

Flag_3.JPG

CSA (Commonwealth Space Agency)

Flag_4.JPG

ESA (European Space Agency)

Flag_5.JPG

ISA (International Space Administration)

Flag_6.JPG

NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration)

They're stretched a bit so they fit properly onto the flag mesh. Thoughts?

They all look awesome. The only thing I'd suggest is to make the next set wildly different in color and design so the player can tell them apart.

Great job on these so far.

By way of other modpacks, Mylon's Holistic Culture mod looks interesting by way of actual game mechanics.

Here's a link:
Holistic Culture

Does anyone actually know where the terrain graphics are kept?

Aren't your terrain graphics unpacked with all of the rest? I remember seeing art folders for units, terrain, buildings, ect. I've even looked at the terrain dds files, but haven't tried to convert any or mod them.

Maybe it's time to start ;)

I'll see what I can do...

Haarbal seems to be eager to mod terrain. Maybe we can pull him from his fantasy civ modpack long enough to try it.

No tree, no real mountains, no water. How hard can it be? (Famous last words. :D)

If you could try it, Haarbal, that'd be great!

I'd suggest you download my moon map (posted somewhere else on this thread) before you start, however. That has a complete list of what the terrains represent on that map. Here's a link to it:
Moon Map

If you're doing mountains, try and make them look a bit more jagged-y and rough.
And crater rims (hills) should be as round as possible in 5x5, 4x4, 3x3 and 2x2 squares.

Now, then, about other threads/mods that could help us:
Religion Research Mod (niffweed17)
Military Bases Mod (TheLopez)
Cultural Decay Mod (Bhruic)
Lost Units Mod (frontbrecher)
Settler Religion Mod (Bhruic)
Larger map sizes (dlordmagic)

Some of these might just be useful. Some mods I looked at weren't especially relevant, though - and Fachy's *Very* realistic religions mod was positively scary!

Speaking about religions, given the dynamic way in which they spread, &c, would it not be better to have colonisation philosophies as civics (and favourite civics) rather than religions?

If so, what do we do with religions?

PS: look at this!

You could still have religions or philosophies, but severely hamper their spread. I don't know if you want/need religion on the moon, but I'm not sure what to do about it either. Civics seem way more important to this mod.

It'd be nice to imagine a world without religion (without meaning to be inflammatory or anything!).

The thing about religions is that they are nowhere near as controllable (and it's hard to limit their growth). I suppose we should keep them - wouldn't it be rather hard to eliminate them entirely?

Or perhaps we could just not attatch them to any technologies...

Alternatively we could attatch big bonuses to each state religion.

What's the general consensus here?
