:(

I have the "failed to initializae renderer" problem. I tried ALL of the suggestions on this forum and the tech page and none of them worked. Finally, I edited the ini file and had it boot in windowed mode only. That fixed it. But, now it will re-boot my pc while I'm in the middle of a game. It happens after around 5-20 minutes of playing, just reboots with no warning at all.

I've also tried adjusting the resolution in the ini file to no avail.

I've been working on this for hours. I've wasted an entire day for nothing.

My BIOS is up to date, my dirx and CIV4 have been re-installed over and over and over. Windows update is current, etc.

SPECS:

I am running windows XP Pro
eMachines T4510 (FIC VG31 MB)
1GB RAM
2.53 Ghz P4
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB RAM
ATI Catalyst 5.12 (8.201.0 driver version) latest

I've disabled all of my normal background programs (avg, beyondtv, etc)

Nothing out of the ordinary in my event viewer.

Anyone have any ideas on this?

:( :( :( :( :( :(

Thanks,
Ted

Could you post a DXDiag info file please.

Sure. I ran all of the tests before and they all passed (didn't feel like sitting through them again)

The results are attached.

Thanks,

Now I installed the Catalyst 4.12 driver. It still won't run in full screen. It hasn't rebooted yet, but it did hang with a spinning wheel... spin, spin, spin!

Ouch!

Sounds like you are going backwards.

Anyways. I looked at the diag and I have a few questions and suggestions.

When you switched from onboard graphics to the 9800 pro did you disable the onboard graphics thru bios? Sometimes you have to turn it off from bios.

If that is not an issue. Did you change the power supply out when You upgraded from onboard graphics to the 9800 or did you just put in the 9800.

Reason I ask is that E machines (most manufactures do this) arent known for having kick ass power supplies. I tried to locate specs on it but couldnt find any. So adding extra equipment could overtax the genric (probably 250w) Power supply. Hi spec graphics cards can add a pretty significant burden to the PS.

Anyways make sure your radeon is plugged in on a line that does not share with any other device most importantly the hard drive. That will cause wierd things even if you have good PS.

Now to the new problem.

It wont finish loading.

When You installed new drivers, did you nuke the old ones first using ati driver cleaner?
