It could just be me, but I've noticed something a little wierd when I set up a new game in Civ3-

If I set the AI opponents to "random" it ALWAYS sticks in every native American tribe (Iroquoi, Aztec, Inca, Maya) before any others. If I set up a game with 3 or 4 random opponents, I can guarantee it will be those.

When I say I want random opponents, I actually mean it. I'm getting a little tired of seeing these guys' faces every time.

I've heard tell that if you click on Random twice, you get random civs. Been a while tho, so I don't remember who said it.

In my two games I've not had much american civs. Only the Aztecs and Iroquois. I chose random civs and I think the cultural linking is on.

Aztecs, Iroquois, Maya and Inca are all American civs...Central and South American.

Do you always chose America as your own civ?

I'm pretty sure that you will get egypt and greece every time if you chose Rome as your own civ.

Actually, some of my favorite civs I like to play as are ancient mediterranean-area ones (Rome, Egypt, Ottomans).

But now I do what someone else suggested, and always turn off "culturally linked locations" and now it doesn't happen much.

That's how it is intended to work, but alas it does not. It is bugged 100%. Just because I got Japan 10 times in a row as an opponent in 8 civs all random opponents games doesn't mean that there's something in the code to make it more probable.

If culturally linked starts is on, the game goofs and thinks you are always in the American culture, thus you always get the 5 American civs. Otherwise, you have an equal 1/30 probability to get a certain civ in a random slot.

EDIT- I just realized that what I said only applies to C3C. Despite playing vanilla for about two years, I always had culturally linked starts off, so I can't tell you if it was bugged then too. That would explain MAS's post if he is indeed running vanilla.

Just choose the civs you want to play from the list. They still get placed randomly. Plus you can get revenge for previous games. I always choose the Aztecs as an enemy as they are dangerous and I want revenge for a sneak nuke attack from CIV 1.

Well, I'm used to it working that way in Vanila. I have C3C now, but didn't try with this setting on in C3C yet, so I didn't knew it was bugged in C3C.
