he Rangers traded four players and future considerations to the Pittsburgh Penguins to re-acquire dynamic winger Alexei Kovalev, along with winger Dan Lacouture and defensemen Janne Laukkanen and Mike Wilson.

Heading to Pittsburgh are forwards Rico Fata and Mikael Samuelsson as well as defensemen Joel Bouchard and Richard Lintner, plus future considerations.

Looks more like a salary dump for Pittsburgh than anything else. This is proof that Pittsburgh has given up on the playoff race this year and is working on developing into a contender in the years to come.

With the new CBA in 2004, there will almost definitely be a salary cap - I would hate to be Glen Sather right about now. Instead of dumping salaries like Bure's 10 million or Holik's 9 million, they trade away three prospects and one seasoned player.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! like that's going to help them! they got all the big guns, but no chemistry.

We can only hope that hockey will go bankrupt, the league will fold, and they will start looking at a way to make hockey more interesting to watch.

Too bad about the penguins though, they are a classy team in a league that (almost) nobody watches.

Although sween, this could hurt our Bruins because Kovalev is a very talented player and even though the Rangers suck, they could really hurt any team making a push for the playoff or division leader.

hockey is dead is pittsburgh.

this trade doesnt mean the pens have given up on the playoffs. it means the pens might not make payroll next month. this isnt a trade at all. the pens dumped salaries period. these guys arent prospects or anything that will develop in the future, they are warm bodies to further the fiction that this wasnt a player sale. basically the rangers payed 12 million dollars for kovie (4.5 million kovalev salary, 1.1 million wilson salary, 2.1 million laukannen salary, .5 million lacouture salary + 4 million cash)

bring on a stike/lockout whatever. this sport is turning into baseball and its making me sick.

The CBA is in 2004, we don't need to worry

i cant wait kmad. seeing hockey slowly erode and turn into baseball is driving me nuts.

i was upset when the jets, north stars and the whalers moved. i thought it was funny that the rangers kept blowing money for nothing without realizing that the increased salaries had a trickle down effect. i was worred when ottowa and buffalo, 2 great hockey towns, had thier franchises go into bankruptcy.

now i see the writring on the wall. without some major changes hockey will have the new six teams 1 in NY, 1 in philly, 1 in dallas, 1 in colorado, 1 in chicago, and 1 in LA.

Well, I hope Bryden's bid for Ottawa falls through so I can see Eugene Melnyk pick up the sens - he has enough ready cash to pay off the debt, purchase the Corel Centre, and sign a couple mercenaries for the playoffs.

Oh yeah, you forgot Detroit

Hockey isn't turning into baseball!

Baseball is WATCHABLE on television. Hockey is not IMO (And millions of others back me up on that BTW).

Hockey needs to change the game itself to save it. (If it's worth saving)

Baseball is watchable if you glue your eyelids open and strap yourself in front of a TV. It's the most boring sport possible, I think.

You don't like hockey fine. but don't change the sport (the best one to play and watch if you ask me). Just out of curiousity...what would YOU change Flatlander Fox?

"We can only hope that hockey will go bankrupt, the league will fold, and they will start looking at a way to make hockey more interesting to watch."

You sir, are an ass. The NHL will never go bankrupt, as a salary cap will be implemented, and hockey is already interesting, you simply have no taste in sports whatsoever.

"Baseball is WATCHABLE on television. Hockey is not IMO (And millions of others back me up on that BTW)."

That is the biggest pile of **** I've ever heard. Baseball is the most boring sport in the world. A bunch of guys running around a circle scratching themselves is not my idea of a good time.

The actual playing time in a Major League Baseball game which lasts two and a half hours has been clocked at 9 minutes and 55 seconds.

Baseball is not fun. Without beer, baseball fans would be rioting in the streets in desperation to make the sport slightly more newsworthy.

agree with LesCanadians (although i wouldnt mind a few rule changes in the NHL - preferably some that are enforced all year long)

Yeah, I'd like to see icing and two-line pass revoked. Also I'd like to get rid of the OT loss point.

"they got all the big guns, but no chemistry."

No such thing as team chemistry - just good and bad coaches.

Golf is the boringest in the world. Or curling.

Hockey is the best and baseball isnt that far behind. Yes, I am a hockey fan and baseball fan and enjoy both in real life and on TV.

Actually, Basketball could be the worst to watch.

Foul, foul, foul, foul, foul, foul, foul, and so on ;)

baseball? watchable? baseball is boring! why do you think whenever there's a fight everybody clears the dugout? they're so bored they want something to do!

Baseball might be the american past-time and football might be the most popular sport but hockey is the best (both to watch and play). When the game is played right, hockey is the fastest sport and the most entertaining.

So why are many of the teams folding or running out of money?

Why does NO U.S. MAJOR NETWORK carry NHL games?

Why is the "boring" game of baseball so popular compared to the "fast and exciting" game of hockey?

Answer me these questions...

Baseball is INFINITELY more popular than hockey in the U.S. And since most of the teams are down here now, this counts for alot.

A CBA won't help ANYTHING if people don't care or don't watch.

The easiest way to fix it is to reduce the number of players on the ice to 4. While hockey purists would flip out, it may just save the game. I did say "MAY".

I will watch hockey live, in an arena. I will not watch it on TV. It does not quicken my pulse at all. I was interested in the Olympics, but only from a patriotic standpoint (Much like my interest in the World Cup and the other boring sport, soccer).

PLUS, @Les Canuck: Insulting me by calling me an ass is somewhat childish, and then telling me that I have no sports taste on top of that is quite a mistake on your part.

I can forgive the ass part, only because you called me sir in front of it. :)

But I have more sports taste than you, I can assure you of that. I not only follow Football, baseball, basketball, boxing (some) soccer, skiing, track and swimming, I have played ALL of them, (most well) and can fully appreciate what athletes go through to perform at the level that they do.

But the key to this is that we all have our DIFFERENT TASTES. So please refrain in the future from saying things that are insulting, and not true.

So why are many of the teams folding or running out of money?

The same way the Twins and Expos are?

Why does NO U.S. MAJOR NETWORK carry NHL games?

Because small networks have contracts with the teams to broadcast the games already.

Why is the "boring" game of baseball so popular compared to the "fast and exciting" game of hockey?

Because Americans have beer to make it less boring?

N Sync is more popular than Pink Floyd. Doesn't mean it's better.

A CBA won't help ANYTHING if people don't care or don't watch.

Research has shown that a CBA will help the game. These people devote their lives to the game, do you think they're doing random crap on a whim for no reason?

Why don't we just add cheerleaders and strobe lights? Oh, and we could have The Rock tag team tie domi. Hockey is a Canadian sport, Canadians don't really care what Americans think of it.

coming from a guy who said HOCKEY SUCKS.

From your list, it seems you haven't played hockey, so you must have no respect for the strength, precision, stamina, and confidence you need to play at a professional level. Your view is totally biased and holds no ground.
