RAR zip format

I downloaded some units compressed in RAR format.
I use Winzip and am not familiar with the RAR compression program. I would like to locate a downloadable "free" sample of it (if possible) so that I can uncompress the files. If it is a good program, I may consider purchasing it, though this is the first time that I've seen it. Can someone share information with me about this program? thanks.

I apologize if I am in the wrong forum. This is my first attempt to post a question, so I appreciate your patience and guidance.

Thank you for your "Powerarchiver" reference, I will see if I can find what I need there.

Oh, I'm sorry Cassus_Belli - I wasn't aware that I existed to make your life easier. I am quite happy to offer patience and guidance, but only if the question is posted in the questions forum, i.e. the MAIN Creation & Customisation forum. If I didn't follow that policy, newbies would think it was okay to post anywhere they liked, with no respect for the forum, because they would get the answer they wanted anyway.

What Cassus_Belli has done is steamed in on his first post, not bothered to look around and wildly posted in the first forum that remotely had anything to do units. It states, in several locations, that this forum is ONLY for completed units, and that all questions belong in the main Creation & Customisation forum.

unscratchedfoot, when I see that there's new posts in this forum I think "Great! A new unit to download!". But no, it's just another newbie with contempt for the forum and everyone who does follow the rules. How would you like it if the Completed Modpacks forums where overwhelmed with newbie questions? Isn't it better that the forums are sorted and organised?

Incidentally, it's a wonder what a Google search on "RAR" throws up...

I don't see how you two posting useless replies to state this is a worthless thread is doing anything more than what you claim to want to prevent - spam.

Spam happens, it's just best to solve the ignorant newbie's problem so the spam fades away. Although pushing the "Report Post to Moderator" link could help.

Why don't they just make you a moderator, zulu?

That reply was a little harsh there, Zulu. I don't think Cassus has any contempt for the forum.

Cassus - you can PM a moderator and ask them to move the thread for you. By the way, I use WinRAR for Rar files. Just type it in your Search box and you'll find it.

Welcome to CFC. Don't worry, most people are a lot more welcoming than Zulu is.:)

No offense meant, Zulu.:p

To All Fellow Civ Fanatics

First, I would like to apologize to anyone who has been offended by my first post.
I do claim ignorance as cause for my offense at the incorrect posting location, though I do not mean this as an excuse. Zulu is correct; he posted several places that questions should be directed to the questions forum. I was over anxious with my send key, and could not revoke the action once done. I will do my best to see that I never repeat this error.

Second, I have nothing but respect and admiration for all those who post their labor, wisdom, and advice to Civ Forum.

Although I am relatively new to the internet and Civ Fanatics, I sincerely love the game Civilization.
I was first introduced to it when it was a Win 3.1 game and have followed it’s progression ever since.
I am not personally connected to the internet and must rely upon College and Library computers for access. Fortunately, many of them have Zip drives and high speed connections now, so I am able to download decent sized files in a hurry, but I am limited to my access time, hence, my first anxious mis-posting blunder.

I have modified my own unit icons etc, since Civ 2, and was trying to find a way to create, or modify the Civ 3 units to suit my quest for more specific flavor units, when someone directed me to your forum. I was overjoyed to find others that enjoyed Civilization as much, or more than myself, and the plethora of already designed units, scenarios, and Mods available by likeminded fans, such as you. Practically every unit that I wanted to create, someone had already thought of, and created. I am a history buff, and appreciate the great attention to detail that I’ve seen.
Each week or so, when I have an opportunity to check, I am continually amazed at the new things I discover here. It’s been a little bit like Christmas, checking to see what new units, multi-units, maps, scenarios, and Mods have been added.
I know that each represents countless hours and many days, and sometimes weeks and months, of effort put forth by incredibly dedicated, creative and selfless individuals whose joy seems to be to share the fruit of their labor with others.
I have been wanting to be a contributor and not just a user of the forum since I first discovered it four months ago.
I have a few older games (WW2, and ancient period, etc.) that I am sorting through for sound files, etc. that may be usable for Civ units.

I am still attempting to upload my first contribution (a revision of Resource Icons, with some original work), excerpted below. I was having some difficulty in attaching the zipped file, and running out of time, when I committed my offense last Thursday.

Once again, please accept my apology for my mistake. It was careless of me. I’m normally quite attentive to detail and I will make every effort to not repeat this error. I post this apology where I made my error, so that it will reach those whom I have offended.

My thanks to sims2789 for directing me to where I can locate a Free trial of the RAR zip program. I am grateful to those of you who took the time to assist me in what may have appeared to be a rather simplistic question. Sometimes the simplest of solutions are easily overlooked.

Thank you Zulu, for setting the judicious tone of respect necessary for the continued operation of a great forum. If there were more people making the same hasty mistake that I did, the Forum would indeed degrade in it’s efficiency to do what it does best by providing what people are there looking for.
Hopefully others will read what you addressed to me, and be far more careful than I was when attempting their first post.
Thanks you.
Sincerely, Casus Belli.

To zulu9812:

After checking, would you please see that my apology is appropriately posted and, after would you consider to be a decent period, please discontinue this otherwise useless post.

I apparently successfully uploaded a zipped file of d Resource Icons, that I collected and revised, but I don't know where they went.
I thought that this Forum would be the best location, but I may be wrong. If you would help me to correctly post the Resource file, then I'm sure that I will be able to duplicate the process with future contributions.
Thank you for your trouble.
Casus Belli
