Razing vs. abandoning

Or you could just do like I do, capture it, starve it down, rebuild it. It solves all problems except you don't get any free workers.

Starving means:
- No free workers
- Increased flip risk for some period of time
- Still the AI's poor location for the town/city

I don't like doing that at all. Raze-and-replace is my standard operating procedure. Capturing is often high risk, low reward. Razing is low risk, medium reward.

What about wonders? I don't think I could bring myself to raze a city with a wonder (unless it was obsolete), but the chance of flipping is even higher with all the built up wonder culture (I would think).

Depends on the wonder and the circumstances, yes. I will certainly raze a city with a wonder or two (or more) in some situations, but I do like to keep some of them around. Wonders certainly change the reward end of the "keep" equation significantly, especially with the tourism bonus cash of C3C. Depending on the wonder and the map, there's definite cause to go for high risk, high reward...trebly so if you plan on wiping that nation out in the next 20ish turns.

Civ newbie here.

When you defeat a Size 1 village, it auto-razes. Does this mean that if there are any cultural improvements to the city (i.e. city improvements that are generating culture), the city would not auto-raze? Also, if the city whips/drafts to a size one, and I capture it - does it still auto raze if there are no cultural improvements?

Thanks.

I belive so. I certainly have never had an auto raise when the borders have expanded, and it has been said here that any culture will stop the auto raise.

I think so. Infact, I belive it will auto raise if there are are not citizens other than that of the conquered civ. I have had a size 2 city raised.

See now that's interesting to me. I had been razing all of the obsolete wonders, without giving much thought to the tourism bonus. I guess maybe I'll try to keep them all around.

Theoritacally speaking, the upshot in abandon is that you can do it any time you want, while you can do anything you want in the city, like troop repairs, build a unit,or something else. For me,abandon and raze does the same, practically.
