1993AD: Japan is being dismantled from the rear.
1994AD: The Malinese Juggernaut has grown restless.
We must decline, but I figure Alex is not much longer for this world.
With more than a 1000 point lead and 55 turns to go, I think we're past the threat of losing to a peaceful rival. The only question now is whether Mansa will turn on us. We WERE Peaceful with him, but refusing to join his attack here has dropped us back to Pleased again. Most likely we will coast on to our victory, but while the fat lady is warming up, she has yet to sing. If we do get attacked, we have a host of vulnerable spots, no air force, nothing of substance but Mechs and a few Arty. Could get ugly.
Toku comes on bended knee, but the answer is still no.
So here's the story.
Fred and Pete go at it. Toku stabs Fred, Alex stabs Fred, but Fred has Panzers and holds on even 3-v-1, albeit taking a bloody nose and some bruises. Then Cyrus stabs Toku and Mansa stabs Alex, both of whom have their armies, or what's left of them, on the wrong side of their empire, at the German border.
Toku and Alex == Tried to draw the Insight Straight. (They are going to fold!)
Unfortunately, while Iustus trained about a thousand settlers, most are now in Germany or Mongolia, rather than in Persia or along our border with Greece.
And, of course, in typical Civ-AI fashion, the AI makes peace with its enemy IMMEDIATELY after trying to get the human to enter the war.
(I really hate that, don't you? I mean, yeah, it was cute and clever the first time, but how many times do you see it before you stop thinking "clever" and start thinking "boringly predictable"?)
Oh and note Cuzco north of Bal'mer. Mike really was correct about there not being any city sites left. I went in to this round with no real interest in settling new cities. I looked over the map and found nothing left to grab in Mongolia except the two bottom corner edge-huggers, barely qualifying for the "size five" rule. However, on closer inspection I found several areas where our culture was pushing back the borders, bringing enough good tiles under our control to support a size 5 or 6 city in a couple of spots. Cuzco is one such, with a lake, grass farm, forest hill, and a few desert windmill spots, so I grabbed it. One or two other such "cultural push" cities were settled.
Mostly, it's the collapse of Japan and Greece, unfolding before my eyes, that is creating new openings. I will get some settlers there, and grab some spots, but opportunities will carry over at least one more player, and perhaps all the way to the end.
