I haven't seen this before.

It surprised me as well. I suppose it is a bonus for canceling those deals many times, like you need to give tech a lot before you get the +1 bonus for that.

1970 (0)

First things first, time to teach these city folks about the farming life!
rb20-iustus-113.jpg

And I discover another town that will need a worker to show them the way.
rb20-iustus-115.jpg

We could get oil, if we really really wanted it.
rb20-iustus-114.jpg

1971 (1)

I order up a bunch of Settlers, not sure we will use them all, but they are 1 or 2 turn builds, better to have them and not use them than to not have them.

1972 (2)

I buy Mansa’s map for 10g. AIs place no value on current tile information, if you have ever seen that tile, they consider that you know it. So its only 10g to find out how his war is progressing.

I also buy Fredrick’s map, same reason, same price.

1973 (3)

Genghis loses his marble, so we lose the deal.

1974 (4)

I know I did not automate any workers, but it looks like someone did. I cancel this. Eventually I get frustrated and start building forts on top of these desert oil resources.
rb20-iustus-116.jpg

1975 (5)

The city with the unspellable name is founded:
rb20-iustus-117.jpg

1976 (6)

In the spirit of their great corn mills, we found Tenochtitlan:
rb20-iustus-118.jpg

Delhi also founded:
rb20-iustus-119.jpg

I give Delhi the sheep from Nome, once the Deer come online, you may want to give them back (or may not).

1977 (7)

Peter asks for help with the Germans. As if!

Toku asks for us to cancel deals with the Germans. Like forget it!

1978 (8)

Founded another city:
rb20-iustus-120.jpg

1979 (9)

Guess what I did? This city can steal the sheep from Eliz.
rb20-iustus-121.jpg

1980 (10)

The wartorn land poaching continues with Shanghai:
rb20-iustus-122.jpg

And Ulaangorn:
rb20-iustus-123.jpg

I will let the next person comment on all the excess Settlers I built. Suffice it to say, I doubt even Sirian can use them all up! (Do not believe me? Take a look at the Military Advisor!) They are spread all over the lands that are currently at war.

I left all the other actions to the next person, but I wanted to found those two cities I had in the pipe.

Those new cities need workers ASAP, they are in a culture war, they need their land improved fast!

Here is the save: Miller_AD-1980

lurker's comment: I guess it really does steal city names from other civilizations  You've founded three extra capitals!

Got it. Should be turned around with 24 hours. Looks like we just need to keep up the cultural pressure and keep spamming those cities.

Is it really a good idea to start pounding Mansa's recent conquests with cities we've slipped in between his? If the borders get too tense we might end up having to fight him and that'd really harsh my mellow here.

Marshmallows? I could go for some toasted mallows, sure.

Er, wait. I claim Drunken Stupor(TM)!

- Sirian

Mansa is our friend! He would never do that!

Seriously though, I built all those settlers, you better use them!

If we do get in a war, we might want to pop a golden age and make a trade for oil so we can build some tanks and/or helicopters.

-Iustus

I know I did not automate any workers, but it looks like someone did.
That was me. I was bored with building all those railroads, so 1 or 2 stacks
of 3 workers do have the building trade network command.
Btw, I do this all the time in my sologames, but I forgot they will also work
unimproved tiles.

I must confess that on my watch I made repeated use of the space bar instead of doing something useful with a bunch of our workers. I like to pretend that I was throwing a decade long kegger, which makes it OK.

1980 Looked at every city and did a little bit of micromanaging. For the borderwars, where we are building culture, I stopped working hammer only tiles and hired artists instead.

I also tended to maximize food where possible so that we can grow grow grow.

I also destroyed a quarry at Tenochtitlin and a gold mine at El Paso.

1981 Cyrus completes the Manhattan Project, so I start SDI in DC.

Liz piles on Genghis and declares war.

1982

1983 Mongolia is wiped out utterly. I guess the moral of the story is Don't Mess with Good Queen Bess.

Mansa adopts free speech and free religion, which will slow down our cultural expansion some, to be sure.

I found Tosontengal, Heliopolis, and Chelyabialis - the last one is a great spot, I can't believe Mansa left it alone, there was already a banana plantation all set up for us.
millercrownjewel.jpg

Sure Karakorum is 12 times the size of Heliopolis, but we have a head start since they're still in revolt.
Millerculturalwar.jpg

1984 Archangelsk is razed by Japan. We also found Elephantine, Portsmouth, Anazazi, and something else I can't quite make out in my notes.

1985 We found Saigon and Tlatelolco.

1986 Frederick cancels our deal for iron. Oh well.

1987 Cyrus declares on Tokugawa. Interesting, but we don't have open borders with either of them so I haven't positioned any settlers to take advantage. Japan captures Bremen, but loses Tayoma(?) to Persia.

1988 About this time I realize that we are still in Pacifism, instead of Free Religion. All of those Hindu missionaries I've been airlifting to our borders are just going to be putting money into Cyrus's coffers. At least the Taoist missionaries pay us, even if they won't help expand the borders.

1989

1990 Peter demands Plastics from us. I decide I'd rather keep Frederick, his worst enemy, more happy with us than not, so I refuse. Nagasaki is captured by Persia.

Here's the SE corner of the world. Not much room for any more cities down there that aren't total edge hugging crap. But I'm sure Sirian will surprise me once again somewhere.
millerSEcorner1990.jpg

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/56599/Miller_AD-1990.Civ4SavedGame

There are still plenty of settlers left, but very few places to put them. Should we consider Free Religion and Free Speech too or just coast along?

IT 1990AD: That SE corner is something else, isn't it? Wow.

This game really is starting to resemble Civ3 Epic Thirty-Six!

From the long-lost unpublished archives, the American poaching of Roman-conquered-Babylon:

rbciv36-sirian-1908ad-flip12.jpg

I flipped 32 cities that game, nearly all via settling in the cracks between conquered cities...
...and out-culturing the conquerors, as we are doing here. :mischief:

Also popped 58 great leaders.
Here's number 56 emerging amidst the Arabian-conquered portion of Azteca:

rbciv36-sirian-1961ad-leader56.jpg

Two snippets from a report that was never published. :crazyeye:

I'm amazed at the thorough poaching job Iustus and Mike have done between the cracks of Mongolia.

As Mike said, nothing left over there but edge-huggers.
I wouldn't bother with them, except the settlers are right there, so what the hey.

1991AD: Alexander declares on Frederick. Could... get... ugly...

Should we consider Free Religion and Free Speech too or just coast along?

Someone early on said they wanted to stay in Pacificm for the duration, out of the spirit of this pacifist varient, it works for me.

Free speech works for me, what is the downside?

-Iustus

Edit: Oops, I did not mean to bisect Sirian's post, do not keep us in suspense Sirian!

1993AD: Japan is being dismantled from the rear.

rb20-sirian-221.jpg

1994AD: The Malinese Juggernaut has grown restless.

rb20-sirian-222.jpg

We must decline, but I figure Alex is not much longer for this world.

With more than a 1000 point lead and 55 turns to go, I think we're past the threat of losing to a peaceful rival. The only question now is whether Mansa will turn on us. We WERE Peaceful with him, but refusing to join his attack here has dropped us back to Pleased again. Most likely we will coast on to our victory, but while the fat lady is warming up, she has yet to sing. If we do get attacked, we have a host of vulnerable spots, no air force, nothing of substance but Mechs and a few Arty. Could get ugly.

Toku comes on bended knee, but the answer is still no.

rb20-sirian-223.jpg

So here's the story.

Fred and Pete go at it. Toku stabs Fred, Alex stabs Fred, but Fred has Panzers and holds on even 3-v-1, albeit taking a bloody nose and some bruises. Then Cyrus stabs Toku and Mansa stabs Alex, both of whom have their armies, or what's left of them, on the wrong side of their empire, at the German border.

Toku and Alex == Tried to draw the Insight Straight. (They are going to fold!)

Unfortunately, while Iustus trained about a thousand settlers, most are now in Germany or Mongolia, rather than in Persia or along our border with Greece.

And, of course, in typical Civ-AI fashion, the AI makes peace with its enemy IMMEDIATELY after trying to get the human to enter the war.

rb20-sirian-224.jpg

(I really hate that, don't you? I mean, yeah, it was cute and clever the first time, but how many times do you see it before you stop thinking "clever" and start thinking "boringly predictable"?)

Oh and note Cuzco north of Bal'mer. Mike really was correct about there not being any city sites left. I went in to this round with no real interest in settling new cities. I looked over the map and found nothing left to grab in Mongolia except the two bottom corner edge-huggers, barely qualifying for the "size five" rule. However, on closer inspection I found several areas where our culture was pushing back the borders, bringing enough good tiles under our control to support a size 5 or 6 city in a couple of spots. Cuzco is one such, with a lake, grass farm, forest hill, and a few desert windmill spots, so I grabbed it. One or two other such "cultural push" cities were settled.

Mostly, it's the collapse of Japan and Greece, unfolding before my eyes, that is creating new openings. I will get some settlers there, and grab some spots, but opportunities will carry over at least one more player, and perhaps all the way to the end.

1995AD: If you haven't noticed yet, I halted research spending and increased GOODNESS to 60%.

:worship:    :worship:

Just in case we need to bankroll a few extra kegs:

rb20-sirian-225.jpg

We have three more Merchants parked in DC, and only one can be used for Golden Age, so... If you feel the need to increase the stash in the petty cash drawer, wake one of them up and send him on a beer run. M'kay?

1996AD: Did not take Mansa long to overrun the nearest Greek city, that former barb location on our flank:

rb20-sirian-226.jpg

Oh and for the record, Future Tech DOES pad the score (a decent amount, even):

rb20-sirian-227.jpg

We could probably score more by going hard on research and burning our leader stockpile on lightbulbing than by the Roach Poach(TM), but I've always aspired to roleplaying a Roach-class character, so we'll stick with the fun angle.

roaches.jpg

Roach Poach(TM)... If there's a hole, we'll settle there! :whipped:

1997AD: OMG, Thessalonica 532'ed!

rb20-sirian-228.jpg

You know, if he's burning cities because he wouldn't take them as gifts if we tried...
...because our borders cut him off from having a contiguous territory...
...then he's going to burn them ALL to the ground.

Roach Poach(TM) in action:

rb20-sirian-229.jpg

Two grass farms at that site. Might as well.

OMG OMG OMG! 532! FIVE--THREE--TWO!

rb20-sirian-230.jpg

Our roaches are scrambling!
Not even daylight can scare them away from that yummy garbage pail! :mischief:

2000AD: Four Greek cities have reached the temperature at which cities burn.

rb20-sirian-231.jpg

We have set up two new nests. More six-leggers are scurrying in to the area.

Japanese cities are not burning, and more six-leggers are needed for this region:

rb20-sirian-232.jpg

Note the pathetically small number of purely-Russian-controlled tiles. Bwaha. :rotfl:

WE NOW HAVE OVER A HUNDRED CITIES! Not even two mechs per city. :crazyeye:

rb20-sirian-233.jpg

The Malinese Sledge descends on the anvil that is Greece:

rb20-sirian-234.jpg

Note to Greek People: Hurricane Katrina en route. GET OUT! GET THE !@#$ OUT OF THERE!

Oh One More Thing(TM)...

The final round has begun. This is it, your last time at the helm.

Make it a good one!

- Sirian

keep in mind that once you hit airports, 10 or 20 mechs alone will suffice in all but the most concerted AI attacks. Their mobility is unmached in that not only can they get airshiped close by, but 2x10 tiles a year in rail movement means you can get 20+ mechs concentrated onto one home tile in 2 turns.

Nn another note, imagine if you could switch to state property lol. never seen that many towns ever.:)

Cheers!
-Liq

U could give Alex a chance canceling open borders with Mali (how many troops did Mali send already -- if he razed 4 cities already it maybe enough, though...)
