RBGC SG2 - In the Thick of It - TEAM N

With the abdication of Emperor Walker the I, wise that he was, the senators of the Universalist Party, headed by the figure known only as the Prime Minister, take control of the government and meet in the first Republican Council to decide the next steps towards building an Intergalactic Republic. After some deliberation, the policies of the Republic for the year 2180AD are outlined below:

-Deploy remaining colonies ships to their destinations as set by Walker.
-Focus on social projects to better our planets.
-Direct our scientists to research Medical Theory and Basic Environmental Control to gain habitat improvement.
-Develop trade and a basic network of defenses if possible.

Jan 2180AD

-Spending set to 65% with a deficit of –43bc. Taxes are set each year so that morale is at 100% and to make sure our population growing as fast as possible.

-Southern colony ship finds Iversonia, a barren blue star with no planets. It heads to Dester to fill the PQ15.

-Western colony ship spots military resource south of Vesta. It will continue towards Vesta with only 50 mil people, but that is fine for now. More people can be sent later.

-The Colony ship with 150 mil is headed to Dester to fill the PQ18.

-Main colony ship merges with Rathra, bringing the population on that planet over 800 mil.

-Our northwestern scout heads to some planets in the extreme northwest. Our surveyor will continue to pick up anomalies in a general path towards the northeast. Our southeastern scout will check out the planets to the southeast.

-Research into Medical Theory at next turn with surplus spending going into social projects.

Feb 2180AD

Technology
Gained: Medical Theory
Started on: Basic Environmental Control.

Social Projects:
Petroni II – Soil Enhancement

-Move ships some more, no new discoveries or colonization.

Mar 2180 AD

Social Projects:
Rathra II – Soil Enhancement
Earth – Soil Enhancement

-A colony ship arrives on Dester III. The Council decides to take no extreme path, even though some are clamoring for a “noble sacrifice.” But not if it makes our people very unhappy.

rbgc2-n-2180mar-1.jpg

-Vesta is colonized.

Apr 2180 AD

Technologies
Gained: Basic Environmental Control
Spending on science is eliminated and all of our budget goes into social project. The budget is also reset to 50%.

-The Torians want our new technology in exchange for cold fusion. The Prime Minister believes that the terms are unfavorable and rejected their offer.

Social Projects
Nesro I – Soil Enhancement
Thuban III – Soil Enhancement
Wardell I – Soil Enhancement

-We take the good choice in settling Dester, but unfortunately our morality only goes up 1 point. With no new planets, the Republican Council is quite concerned about possible war from goody-two-shoes Altaria. Trade must be sent to Altaria ASAP.

rbgc2-n-2180apr-1.jpg

-Habitat Improvement is added to the build queue on our governor Ms. Kolaz, right below banking center and above entertainment network.

Diplomatic Front
We offer: Basic Environmental, Comm Theory, and Medical Theory
Toria gives: Artificial Gravity, Cold Fusion, Propulsion Theory, and 40 IP

We offer: Basic Environmental and Medical Theory
Drengin gives: Impulse Drive

We offer: Basic Environmental and Medical Theory
Altaria gives: Defense and Industrial Theories, 40 IP

The Republic now lacks only Deflectors relative to the aliens.

May 2180 AD

Social projects:
Gladstone I – Soil Enhancement
Dester III – Soil Enhancement

-Our scout discovers a morale resource in the middle of Torian space.

-Expenditure is cut down to 43% to balance the budget.

(IT)
-An Altarian freighter arrives at one of our planets, giving us an additional income of 4bc and will only grow in the coming years! Furthermore, this is bound to help us maintain stable relations with Altaria.
The Prime Minister issued a public statement, “We welcome the trade our friends the Altarians bring to us. We will be sure to repay the favor with a few trade ships of our own soon.”

Jun 2180 AD

Social Projects:
Gladstone III – Soil Enhancement
Petroni I – Soil Enhancement

-Our scout discovers Martzia I in the middle of Acrean space, with a PQ14. It is a possible candidate for settlement in the future.

(IT)
-We meet the Yor Collective, who are stranded on a single planet in the northeastern corner. Our analysts believe that the Yor are likely to fall victim to the Altarians, who have 4 systems.

Jul 2180 AD

Social Projects:
Petroni II – Banking Center

-The USS Hero sets out to explore the Altarian worlds to determine which is a best candidate for future trade routes.

Aug 2180 AD

Social Projects:
Earth – Banking Center
Rathra II – Baking Center

-Our scouts make contact with the Acreans, who are in the southeastern corner with 2 systems.

-Relations with Toria slips to cool. The Republican Council is concerned, but has nothing to appease the Torians, except that they should now be the first target for our trade ships.

(IT)
-The minor race the Carinoids build an economic capital. The Republican Council believes that we could use one too…

Sep 2180 AD

Social Projects:
Wardell I – Banking Center
Dester II – Soil Enhancement
Nesro I – Banking Center
Thuban III – Banking Center

-With improved income from our social projects, our budget is back up to 50% with only a deficit of –1bc.

-Our scouts find only barren systems to the north of Toria.

Diplomacy:
-Toria is the tech leader, with Altaria in second. The Drenign have Deflectors above us, while the Yor and Acrean are both behind us.

We give: Industrial Theory
Toria gives: Weapons Theory, 15 IP

Oct 2180AD

Social Projects:
Gladstone I – Banking Center
Vesta II – Soil Enhancement
Dester I – Soil Enhancement

Nov 2180 AD

Social Projects:
Dester III – Banking Center
Petroni II – Habitat Improvement

-Petroni II starts on an Economic Capital, due in 12. Hopefully social spending will improve in the coming years, spending this construction up.
-The Prime Minister proudly announced today that our Republic is now number one in the galaxy in population. Our analysts showed that our population growth has been tremendous in the last few months, and if these trends continue, we should soon leave the rest of the aliens in space dusts in terms of population.

Dec 2180AD

Social Projects:
Earth – Habitat Improvement
Galdstone III – Banking Center
Rathra II – Habitat Improvement
Petroni I – Banking Center

-Rathra II is taken off the governor Ms Kolaz. Instead, the Prime Minister decreed that it shall be turned into the Terran Manufacturing Capital. While we do not have the technology that enables Manufacturing Capital just yet, we have ordered it to start on a manufacturing center.

-Our surveyor finds an unexplained anomaly that gives us 25% information into the tech that our scientists are currently “researching,” Interstellar Business. Find more of these anomalies to cut down the time on that expensive tech.

Jan 2180AD

Social Projects:
Wardell I – Habitat Improvement
Thuban III – Habitat Improvement

-A space shark is sighted near Dester. This could be troublesome.

The End of the Year Report and Notes

-With most of our planets having finished soil enhancements and banking centers, it is time now to finish habitat improvement and develop some trade goods or wonders. The most important early on are Diplomatic Transistors and Aphrodisiac.
-After the habitat improvements, the current Council believes that it is important to develop a trading network and a defense network. Perhaps our scientists should research Deflectors and then our planets can work on some freighters and defenders.
-The southeastern scout is trying to uncover the remaining unseen system to the southeast. Our scouts are racing towards the unexplored systems to try to find the Alexians.
-Keep the sliders balanced so that we have little or no deficit and 100% morale to ensure maximum population growth. With new social projects completed, remember to check taxes to see if it can go up.

The Prime Minister is proud to end his term, having increased our income from less than 80bc to over 178bc in a year, more than doubling our capabilities. This figure can only increase with the growth of population and hopefully the quick development of a trade network. He believes in a path of economic superiority. With additional revenue coming into the government, then later on, this could be translated into additional spending to show the aliens the greatness of Terran culture.

rbgc2-n-2181jan-1.jpg

As he retires, the Prime Minister utters these words, “I’ll be back.”

Good job! :goodjob:

I would have done a couple things slightly differently, but not enough so to make much of a difference. The main thing being that I would prioritize habitat improvement before banking centers. As I mentioned before, a PQ bonus will also result in more taxes being generated; since PQ increases everything (including economy) it seems to me to be worth building first and foremost.

Note that turning down an event that gives bonuses if you take a less good path but no penalties if you take the good path will always only result in a 1% morality shift. Presumably the converse is also true for evil events. In order to get a significant shift toward the good end of the spectrum, we will need to take a penalty on some planet or another. I agree that a big morale hit on a high-quality world is not the kind of penalty we are interested in taking, however. The best option would be a research hit, especially on world that's low-PQ to start with.

The next leader should probably try to squeeze a couple turns of military builds for freighters in there amidst the social building and working towards acquiring the tech for our manufacturing capital. Right now just having some trade routes going for improved relations is more important than optimizing where they are coming from, which can be done later. Other than that, it's a bit of a juggling act as we try to get into the wonder race. Note: we are in 1st place in economy and overall -- this means we are not likely to be targetted by any AI for "acquisition." We probably don't need to worry about building a lot of military ships for defensive purposes yet. I wouldn't worry about defenders; once we get Shields (for BattleAxes) that might be a better time to pop out a couple defensive ships and constructors.

Note: I will be out of town from Fri-Sun, so if G-force gets done his turn soon, you will probably have to skip me for the second round. We're off to a fine start for now, though, so I wouldn't worry too much.

While I know habitat is probably more useful than a banking center, because it raises not only revenue but also morale, which translates into the ability to raise taxes and thus get even more revenue, some planets already had started on banking centers by the time I got to habitat. I did not want to interrupt the banking centers, although actually come to think of it now, it would probably be a better idea to complete the habitats first, for the few lost turns in production are not very significant.

Thanks for the info on the "no penalties" morality events. That's definitely very useful to know.

I agree, just sending a few freighters from planets closest to the AI early on is key. The revenue is nice to have, but most importantly, we want to keep our neighbors happy. Focus on the Torians (probably send 2 freighters) and then the Altarians (someone will research advance trade, most likely, and it can obtained through trading), so build 3 freighters total.

What program do you guys use to edit graphics? I need something that can crop images and save the cropped out part as smaller .jpgs.

I use Image Expert, which came free with my digital camera, but I expect there's lots of freeware out there that will do the job. You could look at tucows.com for instance to see what they have.

*Got it*

Is it correct that the file is only 35.7 KB? It seems rather small to me.

As I certainly don't want to screw up, got any other advice?

G-Force

Senator G-Force takes over the leadership for a year:

As his predecessors have all done such good jobs, he sees little point to start changing everything. All is quiet in the early months.

Eventually the spending is increased as a freigter from the carinoids arrives, bit later another one from the Altarians.

Spending shift to 0-50-50

A scout comes accross a space shark, we decide not to bother the animal and let it be.

October 2181:
Interstellar buisiness is researched, next up is deflectors.
Taxes downed to 35% to maintain a 100% approval, spending is at 63%
Ordered the construction of aphrodisiac, diplomatic translators and ultra spice.

Status report received:
Top7.JPG

November 2181:
We meet the Alexians to the south, their sector is under Drengin influence. Sliders set to 30-30-50

December 2181:
Deflectors are researched, shields (battleAxe) is next. Ordered the construction of aphrodisiac, diplomatic translators and ultra spice. The UP will be meeting next month.
Earth build colony ship, unsure of why the ship remains in orbit for the next Emperor to decide. Freighter from Dester(1-4) is made and send to Zeus (Altarian 5-0)

Influence resource discovered in sector 3-7

January 2182:
The United Planets vote on a tax on systems not in their control. Only for 2 years, all ours are fine so I vote for 5bc per month. The result is 5bc per month, only 2 voted no tax.
Drengin want to trade Interstellar Buisiness for phasers, I don't agree. We are less skilled in diplomacy.

End game report:
All was well when I started, all is still well. Trade goods are under construction, finances have increased. Neutral stance with all but 2 civilizations (Altarian & Torian).
EndGame.JPG

So I didn't screw up :goodjob:

Save is: here

If there are any problems downloading the file, I can always email it to the next one

G-Force

Ok, since Zed-F is out of town, I'll grab it as I'm next.

The only comment would be that working on trade goods at the speed we are on is not a viable option. We'll never get them that way.

G-Force - your link didn't work but I got the file off the server just fine.

Industrial Love

As the esteemed councilman G-Force stepped down from his post in late 2181 it was expected that Zed-F the leader of the Universalist party would be a shoe in for the leader of the Inter-Planetary Senate. There was only one problem, he had taken an extended vacation in Altarian space  and the party was a horrible mess. In desperation they turned to their former leader, General Walker, bringing him out of retirement on the beautiful planet of Vesta was no mean feat, but the senate begged and pleaded and finally he relented.

Upon assuming his seat in on the council he realized that the Republic was in dire straits. To his horror he saw that someone had started producing trade goods without any industrial infrastructure... and that Social Spending was at an all time low. Technologically the Republic was doing quite well with the first prototypes of the "Battle Axe"
Axeman.gif
being developed. The first trade ships had been sent out, and more where being built. Also good. And in addition an interesting and unique resource had been discovered deep in Drenging territory that had to be acquired as it is some form of universal mind altering drug that helps us keep the aliens more malleable. Things are looking good or will be by the time Senator Walker has gotten his bills rammed through the rather partisan senate.

January 2182

- Spending set to 40/60 Military/Research at 63% netting -18 which would give us shields in 2 turns.

- As morale was having a serious detrimental effect on our economy I realized it would have to be changed soon.

- Added Embassies to the govenor list (+10% Star Infl is very good for us).

- All major planets are shifted to Manufacturing Centre

- "Senator Walker, the Carinoid trade delegation is here."
- "Send them in"
The senator looks over the aliens and realize that there was an excellent chance here to catch up with the rest of the galaxy in technology.

- Trade Interstellar Business, Weapons Theory for Advanced Trade, Controlled Gravity, Phasors and 22IP.
- Trade Interstellar Business and Medical Theory to the Arceans for Nano-Metal Refining and 37IP.
Trade Interstellar Business to the Torians for Zero Gravity Research, Photons and 85IP.
- Trade Interstellar Business and Zero gravity Business to the Altarians for Space Militarization, Energy Channeling and 24IP.

- The Yor and the Drenging have nothing we need.

- If we allow tech sales to the Alexians we have tons to sell them. As I am unsure I'll just leave that conundrum for the next leader.

- Set Espionage to 2BC (first notch) for all aliens.

- Keep our ships moving about the same as before.

February 2182

- With Senator Walker at the helm, people put their faith in the party and the Universalists win 93 seats in the Senate.

- Tax set to 54%, morale is 80% (average, most of our good planets are still 100% :goodjob: )

- 60/40 Military/Research for Shields next turn.

- An Altarian Freighter arrives for 7bct

March 2182

Shields are discovered and research is set to Interstellar Refining next turn at 55/45

Spending set to 90%, because we can.

April 2182

Interstellar Refining is discovered tech set to 0 and Cultural Trade

Production:
Freighter @ Vesta -> Battle Axe - Ship sent to Artemis

We spot a research resource to the south of Vesta.

- Hire Dr. Marshall to take care of all the planets with PQ<20 and keep Ms. Kolaz for PQ>19.

- Military spending to 100

- A Torian freighter arrives at Dester 5/mnt.

May 2182

This is vetoable, and some are still on the normal queue.

Our current situation:
RBGC-SG2-TN-2182ad-2.JPG

As his year in office ends Senator Walker is quite content. All the major planets have proper industrial infrastructure and can now build at reasonable speeds. He hands off his post to senator Cheng and is looking forward to another peaceful retirement on Vesta.

Save is here

I'm no expert, and was probably worrying too much about income.

Nicely played turn!

G-Force

Got it.

Just for clarification, since we have trading restrictions on MASO difficulty, it is OKAY to trade to the Alexians. The Alexians will normally buy techs on maso difficulty.

I couldn't remember if we agreed on not doing that as well... and the game seems to be moving along very smoothly without doing it. It will end faster if we trade though, being able to push spending up to 100% would be very nice, especially with the new industry.

2183AD

The elusive figure known only as the Prime Minister decides to pass on the reigns of power to the upstart Senator Cheng from Earth. Indeed, this senator supplied the Prime Minister with the early dictates of government policy and guided the Terran Republic to greatness.

As Cheng assumes authority in the senate chambers, he announced a sweeping set of new policies designed to maximize the economic and industrial capabilities of the Republic. He has already looked over the policies of his predecessors and decided that there were better choices that the Republic can take. His plans for 2183AD are outlined below:

-Exchange technology to the Alexians to boost income and reorganize finances and spending to maximize our capabilities.

-Set spending to social projects and get the Terran production up, maybe even grabbing a few trade goods/wonders, the most important of which are:
-Aphrodisiac (more pop = more influence)
-Ultra Spices
-Restaurant of Eternity
-Galactic Exhibition

Jan 2183AD

-Senator Cheng called a delegation to discuss an exchange program with the Alexians. After careful deliberation, this deal is concluded:

rbgc2-n-2183jan-1.jpg

-Shaking his head at the policies of his predecessors, Senator Cheng decided to install a new governor, a certain Mr. Henry Ford IX, at each planet and personally supervise the manufacturing capital. He decreed that entertainment and morale should be the primary focus, as that increase population and thus revenue. Furthermore, more entertainment means that the people won’t mind more taxes. And more taxes are always nice. Thus, he made sure that entertainment networks and embassies a higher priority on ALL planets. Maximizing population growth should be the key objective.

This is the rather dismal economic report the Senator received in January.
rbgc2-n-2183jan-2.jpg

-Redirected ships.
-The freighter near Altarian space is directed to their economic capital. More revenue if the targeted planet is richer.
-The freighters to Toria are kept on their current course.
-The constructor to the western influence resource is kept on track.
-A constructor to the southern to the southern influence resource is sent to grab the military resource near Vesta. The other constructor is kept on course to the southern influence resource.

-Trade established between Wardell and Antra (Altarian).
Feb 2183 AD

Much better:
rbgc2-n-2183feb-1.jpg

-With the completion of entertainment networks, taxes went up by 50bc in one month, with morale at 100%. Senator Cheng is pleased. Construction on most planets set to embassies, with the top production/population planets at work on trade goods.

-Earth starts on Aphrodisiac, due to complete in about 1 year.

Mar 2183 AD

-Manufacturing capital completed on Rathra II. Started on Ultra Spices, due in 6 (all time numbers are in galciv terms, so add 1 to them, in this case, it’s really 7 months).

-After careful consideration, Senator Cheng orders a massive tax hike, but only so that the most populous planet, Earth, does not stay below 50 morale. Below 50 morale, a planet will lose population, and that should never be allowed. A small percentage of the budget is redirected into research, to get Nano Electronics and then Nano-Frequency Electronics for multimedia centers.

Apr 2183 AD

Technology researched: Nano Electronics

May 2183 AD

Technology researched: Nano-Frequency Electronics

-Multimedia center added between embassy and research labs on Mr. Ford’s build queue.

-Earth microed to build a multimedia center, and with that complete, resume on Aphrodisiac.

Jun 2183AD

Technology researched: Improved Environmental Control, for that little extra pop growth

-Spending resumed on social projects at 100%, many planets with multimedia centers due out in 4 months.

July 2183AD

-Another influence resource is discovered near the research/military resource near Vesta. A constructor heading to the research resource is redirected towards this new influence resource.

Aug 2183AD

-Senator Cheng takes a well-deserved summer vacation, because with his efficient management, there is little left to do but wait until the social projects are completed. He will, of course, be informed of any major developments that might occur.

(IT)
-Indeed, the Senator is pleased to hear that the Torians sent a freighter to one of the Republic’s planets. He then promptly falls back to sleep.

Sep 2183AD

-The Senator’s vacation extends into a second month.

Oct 2183AD

-Senator Cheng resumes his duties as several new developments take place.

-Foremost among them, the Republic completes Ultra Spices, a very valuable trade good (sorry, forgot screenshot). Many planets also complete multimedia centers, boosting their morale up. Earth resumes work on Aphrodisiac.

-An influence resource is mined south of Vesta.

Nov 2183AD

-Our constructor sent to the southern influence resource arrives just a turn ahead of an Acrean constructor. Senator Cheng is very pleased and decides to personally commend the crew, renaming the starbase “Walker’s Legacy.” The Terran Republic now controls 2 influence resources.

-A bunch more multimedia centers complete.

-Thuban III starts on Frictionless Clothing.

-Nesro I starts on Tri-Strontium Steel.

Dec 2183AD

-The Republic falls into a slight deficit treasury, for Senator Cheng had increased spending last month to get a few multimedia centers done in this year. This is a minor problem and shall be easily rectified by his succesors.

-The last of the multimedia centers complete on our most populous planets.

-Rathra II starts on Gravity Accelerators, due in 5.
-The first trade route is established with Toria at the planet Artemis.

Jan 2184AD

Senator Cheng completes his year in office, content of the progress that he brought to the Republic, including the completion of its first trade good, Ultra Spices. Income and morale has both shot up like a bullet. This result of that can be seen in this diagram below:

rbgc2-n-2184jan-1.jpg

Compare that to the income at 100% morale from January of 2183AD.
There is also the boosted income from trade and from the tech sales to the Alexians, both also significant.

He has some notes for his successors:

-Earth is currently building Aphrodisiac, Thuban III Frictionless Clothing, and Nesro I Tri-Strontium Steel. It is not advisable to change these build orders, as they are already several months in progress.

-We have another freighter headed to Antra (Altaria) and Artemis (Toria). However, we’ve already maxed out our three trade routes. In this matter, Senator Cheng notes that if our scientists research Cultural Trade, then Instant Communications, and finally Xeno Trade Persuasion, we could easily gain 2 additional trade routes, some more +10%s to trade, and an influence wonder to build.

-Morale is at 100%. This is for maximum population growth (which will multiply after the effects of the Aphrodisiac we’re building). Population also means influence.

-Since our spending is only at 79%, we need more INCOME before we build manufacturing social projects. We need to somehow get spending up to 100% without losing money. With increased income from trade and population growth, this should be possible in the next 2 years.

With this said, Senator Cheng gracefully retires out of the spotlight.

Good Job Cheng! Excellent turns :goodjob:

Regarding the freighters. When they arrive start killing the shorter routes (Markus, and the first route to Altaria) as they were both temporary routes anyway.

Only minor issue: Mr. Ford. His list gives Aliens your production queue. This is a bug and will be fixed in the next patch.

Really about the Mr. Ford governor? That is one funny bug, so I will keep that in mind.

About trade routes, yes, the idea is sometimes for some temporary routes first and then to kill the trade routes, but why when we could easily get two more techs, in probably 5-6 months, and thus get two extra trade routes? Unless, of course, the two freighters were both sent from our economic capital, in which case killing the prior trade routes will work better in the long term. Just keep in mind that we can easily research more trade routes.

Yupp, I am aware. The two traders were sent from what will be our heaviest population centre (population is as big a determiner of revenue as economic power if not more).

W.r.t. to the Mr. Ford bug, yupp it's in the 1.13 bug forum. Carielf has fixed it, but the release isn't out yet. *points to first set of turns* My write-up was not entirely meant as a joke...

Btw. if G-Force gets his turn done early, do we take another round or do we just wait for Zed-F to return. G-Force is in Europe so he would finish it about 9-10 hours ahead of me... I'm not entirely sure of the SG etiquette here.
