Hi everyone,

I'm new to the Civ series and just got CivIV on Thursday. I've gone through a few games so far, and won most of them based on most points at the end (haven't had any real wars yet). I'm having a blast with it. :goodjob:

I'm having a problem with my workers when they build a Cottage around a city. Even though the city has plenty of hammers, gold, food, and was connected to the cottage with a road, the Cottages refuse to grow into Hamlets. :(

Can anyone offer any advice on how to make them grow?

Also, can anyone tell me how to slow down time? I'm the kind of player who likes to develop the economy before starting up the war machine. At the end of the game in 2050 the most advanced units I had were rifleman. :ar15:

Thanks for any help. :D

No, he meant "when you go into the city screen, do you have a circle (pop point) on the tile that contains the village?"

You've got to have one of your city's workers working on the tile for ten turns to get it to expand.

Alright I understand now. I have to have the tiles being worked for them to grow.

Any advice on how to adjust time so I have the appropriate units in different eras? Like no rifleman in the middle ages, or catapults in 2050.

You can change the game speed to epic which slows it down greatly.

Although I am not sure how it slows the game down, as I have yet to play a game on epic.

So, just so I have it right, if I put it to epic speed, it just slows down the process of research, the game doesn't take longer does it? I mean, you don't get more turns in epic do you?

I don't think you get more turns in epic. I just played a game tonight where I was conquered by two groups of barbarians. What I don't like about epic mode is that building a stinking farm can take 8 turns. At 40 year/turn right after you start out, that's 320 years to build a farm! I'd like to learn how to mod it so you can build some things quickly (like farms, cottages, pastures) while your research is still slow.

The epic mode slows down _everything in the game_. There is a thread in the C&C where people have been discussing about how to modify the game to have a real epic game (only research slowed down) where you have time to use your units before they become obsolete.

"Epic: It takes a longer number of turns to construct, research, and improve."

Straight from the manual.
