Content Paradise has Poser 6 on sale until Dec. 31st. I'm thinking of getting it - fits my budget & old computers' capabilities.
Are there advantages/disadvantages over 5 to using it for C3C creation?
Are the standard settings for unit modelling/rendering much different? What about the settings/morphs that have been discussed for other models such as Michael or Apollo Maximus?

Has someone written an explanation/guide for making a unit fade (slowly become visible/invisible?

Can you direct me to the following props suitable for units / LHs (free or low cost, of course):
Revolver / early era Pistol
Pocket Watch (maybe with chain)
Walking Stick
Regency style cravat or Floppy Bow Tie:

Hikaro has used some slow fade outs in some of his units. You might ask him how he does it.

There's a Poser walking stick in the Civ DL database posted by Plotinus. I'm not sure if it is exactly what you are looking for.

Walking stick

I use Poser 7 and there is also a walking cane in the "Primitives" folder under the props. Not sure if it will be in Poser 5 as well.

As far as unit-making goes, there would be not much difference.

I don't know if Poser 5 has the Cloth Room. If it doesn't, then getting Poser 7 is worth it if you want the ability to make fluid cloth animations. They are difficult to do but well worth the effort. This is how I made my Hobbit Burglar with his cloak. And a lot of those Steampunk requests are crying out for similar treatment (imagine Holmes with a swirling cape, or Jack the Ripper sneaking about with a flapping cloak).

Poser 7 would certainly be better for LH-making. If I remember aright, the Hair Room was introduced with Poser 6 (which is what I've got). This lets you make much more realistic hair than you can achieve with hair props. Although it's a pain to use, as you'd expect.

Revolver prop, walking stick prop and such can be found easily on most free-3d-sites. A quick google search can give you some good links. My favourite is ShareCG but you can also try Turbosquid, Renderosity, Content Paradise...
