I'm not there anymore.
Reach for the Stars was made by SSI and SSG, and distributed by Mattel Interactive. It was released in 2000, and is a "4X" game. It is not supported at all, and it isn't terribly stable. I like it, and have all four patches released for it (only one seems to still be available on the web). I was just curious if anyone else around here owns it. I'm also wondering if anyone knows of a website dedicated to the game. I've been searching the internet for one, and can't find any.

Yes i do, but it's much less complex than master of orion...

Very true. Normally, I would call that a bad thing. I'm a micromanager at heart. :D But sometimes it's nice to be able to just play.

I made a scenario for the game. I'll post it if you are interested.

I have this one & play it from time-to-time. I got my last patch direct from someone in SSG.. 1.3 alpha or something. Which patch do you have ? The AI is pretty tame but the tutorial is impossibly hard at a certain point. I usually play huge map random games though & have not really looked at the scenarios very hard.

It's a fun game.. & you get to fight as opposed to playing Simcity on a bunch of planets. I have no idea if it is workable in multiplayer.

The last patch I have is called 1.3 alpha2. It was the last one released. I was a member of the ClubSSI RFTS board until the whole operation collapsed, and the in-house patches were released to the forum. There were four patches in all, but the last two were never released to the general public.

I can beat the tutorial. The gag in a couple of the scenarios is, you aren't supposed to win. You "win" by performing beyond expectations.

There is a follow on campaign that is even harder, but only those who have all the patches can actually play it!! And you thought Civ3 was bad...

I do enjoy the game when I want a little mindless fun. I usually like the micromanaging that other games of the genre make you deal with, but sometimes I need a break from that.

1.3 alpha2 is the one that I have too.. along with two others. So I am missing one.

I have beaten the Bugs as the Lizards in the tutorial... yet they, the Bugs, still come on about turn 21 in the following game & kick Terran butt. Your ships just are not up to holding off the Bug Supers & the planets fall one-by-one.

It's a fighting game & I enjoy that. Would like to play the tutorial all the way through as it sets up a fun premise .. & the following Campaign game.

Do you care to correspond a bit on it ?

Roger Keating & I are acquinted somewhat.

Okay, I'm mistaken about the number of patches I have. It appears that I can't count. I have three, and I think that's all there were.

Filenames:
Reach4tspatch1_1.exe
rfts_patch_1_2_universal.exe
rfts_patch_1_3_alpha3.exe

You know Roger Keating? Wow. I fell in love with the first RFTS game in 1982(?) when it came out for the Commodore 64.

I don't mind corresponding. PM or e-mail? Either is fine with me.

EDIT: I remember now where I got the number "four" from! There WERE two patches released to the ClubSSI forum, 1.3 alpha2, and 1.3 alpha3. Alpha3 replaced alpha2, but didn't update the version number on the opening screen. If you need 1.3 alpha3, I'll either upload it to the server here and link it, or e-mail it to you. Whichever you like.

I have alpha3 & the 1.2 one... but don't have the 1st. One would assume that version 1.2 would replace version 1.1 ...... true ?

Send me an email & tell me how to beat the bugs in the tutorial as Terrans. I don't get the ships that you normally get gratis when the Terrans fight the Lizards , does this mean that there is something wrong ?

thanks,

Untrue. All must be installed, in order, for the updates to be complete. Do you have the campaign "Enter the Klaa'Keen?" If my guess is correct, you don't. That campaign, and a few scenarios, were not on the game disk, and were only included in a patch. I think it was the first patch.

Man, it's been a VERY long time since I played the tutorial campaign. I can't remember how I did it. Ah well, this will give me an excuse to play it again! :)

As for the gratis ships when fighting the lizards, you need to have at least one ship at Barnard's Star before going into that scenario. If not, the game will not allocate you those extra ships.

Zip up the 1.1 patch & send it to me... we might even try out the IP MP mode...tho my experiences all indicate that it's likely to be unworkable. We could be surprised.

Who knows ? We might even come across a 3rd or 4th goofball... LOL !! You on ICQ ?

Thanks a bunch !!
