I have a simple suggestion for the lower/mid level players (I put myself in those groups) if you are struggling with how to improve your game.

Read the game summary for the top finishers in the GOTM games.

I didn't realize you could do this and stumbled across it by accident, but assuming you have the basics of the game down and want to improve further this could be very helpful for you, it was for me.

Go to the RESULTS page. You can get there from the submit page it's a menu option in the upper right. On results you see the submitted games starting with highest score. Click on the blue hyperlink VICTORY for the game you want to see (start at the top or with the victory type you are working on) and scroll through their game log.

What was helpful for me was seeing the sequence of techs researched, how early they got into their wars, that they razed many of the captured cities and (sometimes) it shows what units were used. It doesn't always seem to show but sometimes it will list under their civ or the one being attacked what unit was used.

To orient you on the replay display the first column is an overall game summary of the most important events for all civs. The 2nd column will be the civ played by the human player. So focus on the 2nd column.

For me just reviewing a handful of these has made a big difference already.

Hope that helps!

It can be interesting to see.
