I've been playing c3c now for almost 6 months non stop. My wife who knows me well is shocked that I have become this compulsive over anything as I am more prone with getting bored quickly and moving on. I'm a little shocked myself.. can't ever remember being this consumed by anything, even though I love playing games, I soon reach a level where I max out my abilities, stagnate and get bored, moving on to some other mystery.. But not here, God I love this game... lol..

Went and bought Warcraft III at xmas cause I thought it was similiar with a fantasy setting... Wrong.. totally different playing style and I was bored in two hours... now I have to try and sell in on ebay.. Thought of trying the new version of Pirates.. but don't have the money to waste on another game that will bore me. Not interested in a game where my reaction time in the determining factor to success... I more like the 'chess' approach where the time for a turn is up to me to determing.

Silly Question to all you gamers.... Is there any other game for the PC that is similiar to c3c in play style?

Thanks..

There are games other than Civilization out there? :scan:

I used to play Heroes of Might and Magic 2,3,4 (for about 4 years) before discovering CIV3... Those are also turn based, but there is no diplomacy and overall, I would rate CIV way higher then them. Although, I must admit that combat sistem in HOMM series does require a good strategic mind. I was able to defeat armies 3-5 times larger in size with good knowledge of all abilities and how to use them better, so there are other games out there that can also captivate and challenge you.

Of course, there's the earlier civ games. And Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.

I've heard Age of Empires is turn based, but I don't know for sure. And Rise of Nations is sorta civ like (the guy who did it got his start in Civ) but it's realtime.

If you like strategy war-games, try Hearts of Iron 2. It isn't turn-based, but it has same "build your empire and think your every move"-thing that is in civ. And its also damn addictive.

Hi all
I personnaly like a lot Heroes of Might and Magic (all versions) and I think that on no basis in can be compared to civ, and it still is a good game. Well a crazy CIV3 maniac like me (been playing since the first CIV) appreciates a small time-out from diplomacy for a HMM "kill em all" or even some sport.
If not, a game that I recommend but unfortunately isn't that chalenging because nobody updates it is Transport Tycoon. It doesn't sound as wary as CIV but it's amazing how the peacefull war called "concurrence" is led in the game (stuck all of the concurrent trains in the depot, bust all his trucks) - "Terrible incident caused 30 dead earlier today on a rail passing".
Going for 30 posts, avatar comming in 29...

Unless they've made some drastic changes for #3, AoE is Real-Time.

As for games, it depends on what you like about Civ3, really. There aren't a lot of games like it. Most TBS's I know of are more tactical, like Combat Mission, HOMM and X-COM. OTOH, most "strategy" games are more tactical than strategic, per se. Most games that are really similar to civ are previous incarnations, and a few side ones that have been mentioned. "Colonization" is the only one I haven't seen brought up, though it's over a decade old now. The only other thing I can think of is "Caesar 3". It's historical, like Civ3, though it's real-time and a City Building Strategy game. It's sort of like SimCity, I guess, though way more micromanageable and a lot more purely strategic; it's much easier to predict (and see) which buildings affect each other. In SimCity, things are much more abstract, while in Ceasar citizens walk around, "spreading" their business. For example, priests walk around visibly, preaching religion for the god of the Temple they're from; Warehouse workers push their wheelcarts around from one warehouse to another, etc.

Wondering that no one mentoined Rome: Total War. It's turn based when you build your empire, it's real time when you fight battles

Me too! I'm really a big fan of Might and Magic (all version, including Heroes of Might and Magic).:) As for turn based strategy game, I really like Master of Magic. I wish that they make Master of Magic II some day...it's a lot like Civ3 but it has heroes and great leaders leading the troops into battle; hopefully, Civ4 will have that.

Thanks for all the input... and it just shows me that i can save alot of money by not getting any others just yet.

I have tried to explain it to my wife why this game has become so addictive.. with little success. I think it is because it is sort of a multi-level chess game with a good combination of thinking and playing. it does not require a kid's eye/hand co-ordination to win and allows me to learn at my rate and take on more challenging conquests as I learn...
And I have to admit that the ability to save a game, and then go back and try a different strat is great.. gets frustrating to invest hours and then then get schmucked with the only choise being to start over again.
Yes, there are some factors that get irritating..like pollution which I hope is deleted from c4.. but until then... the wife will at least know I'm not going to the bar to find trouble... as long as she dusts me once in awhile, we'll be fine..

You don't really build your empire... the main part of RTW is killing other people on the battlefield.

Well, I am a Mac guy. However, I know that these games should be available on PC as well. 1)Europa Universalis II 2)Hearts of Iron 3)Victoria. They are all quite nice and addictive. They are not like Civ exactly, but then again nothing is. Which is why Civ is just so damn good!

I enjoy RTW. I skip the battles and let the engine decide the outcome, since the micromanagement of units during a real-time battle gets too involved for me. To me, it seems very similar to Civ, but they have a number of AI and engine bugs remaining to be fixed.

I'd recommed:

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic
Far Cry
Fallout
Counter Strike: Source

What do they have in common with Civ? Addiction ;)

I saw how the 1st and the 4th are shoot'm up games. I like Rome Total war. Although that is mostly because I love the battles.
Apha Centari is as close as you are going to get, short of getting Civ 2 or 1. It has many nice game concepts, like you can design your own units. So you can make a defending unit with exelent defence and almost no attack, or a paradroper that is designed to be a excelent fighter.

For similar to Civ, I'd recoment Stronghold. It has intense micromanagement like Civ. It is in real time, but I slow this down because I like to be able to "think".
