What does rebuffing the rebels do when a city revolts and wishes to come under your rule? Does the city get destroyed, or does it simply retain its original ruler?

I've never tried rebuffing, since I always considered a free city a free city. But when an idiot civ plants a city 3 squares away from one of your own, and going to war in order to raze it isn't a decent option, I begin to wonder what rebuffing will do if and WHEN it flips over to me.

On a similar note, is there any way to destroy one of your own cities?

Has nobody tried rebuffing the rebels, or do you all just enjoy watching me suffer in this deafening silence?

*sigh*

I have no idea what happens when you rebuff rebels, but I managed to destroy one of my cities by making settlers out of the last two inhabitants.

I recieved the question "Do you want to abandon whatever-the-name-of-the-town-was?". When I answered yes, the city vanished and was replaced by a settler.

When I tried doing that again later on, creation of the settler just halted until the city had reached size 3. I have no idea what the difference was between the two cases. Sorry...

Hmm... Not much use I realize, but still... Yes, you can destroy your own cities. I just don't know how.

Ahh, very interesting! It'd be a great option to have for those little worthless cities that you want to either move to a more lucrative site, or want to get rid of for city cap purposes, or what have you.

I'll have to mess around with that next time I'm playing and post the results here.

Oh, and thanks for the response. :)

Rebuff them...never occured to me to do that :D

The difference was either one of two things. If the city is currently growing, it will wait until it grows to produce the settler. If the city is stagnating or starving, you get the message box asking if you want to abandon the city. Additionally, IIRC, at Warlord difficulty (for workers at least, not sure about settlers), if you build with only 1 pop point, the worker will get built anyway, without the city losing a pop point. Sort of an extra cheat to help the novice player out.
