Thanks to the generosity of GOG.com, I received a free copy of MOO3 this morning. I had the choice of any $10 game, I picked MOO3 cuz I don't trust the hype. And because I've seen how well fan mods can transform a mediocre game into something better. EDIT: WOOT I just won MOO1+2 as well!

What mods do fans of MOO3 recommend?

I would advice you to try here:

Strawberry, Vanilla or Tropical mods, depending on your tastes. They are mod packs that include really a lot of additions and bug fixes. I prefer Tropical myself ;)

Then of course you would like to add the "1024x768 MOD II: Battle At Aruspex" mod that you can find in the home page here:

I like the Strawberry mod and use some other small tweaks. Most of the big mods come with all the key fixes done by fans like Bhuric. You really need most of them to get things managable.

I also use the 1024 mods, not sure if that is critical.

1st try MoO3 with just Bhruic's MoO3 Patcher and Patches.

His site is still up just google it, or go to www.moo3.at to get it. Install the Patches and some of the mini mods (read thru them 1st, the mods, as some are for modders to add hull sizes etc to the game).

Once you've played a couple of game with his game saving Patcher, then look for a mod or 2 to experiment with. But if you stick with just the patcher and patches you will find a whole new game experience without additional "fluff".

Don't get me wrong Vanilla, Strawberry, Tropical UOPs are great. So is Pedxing's Chocolate mod. Try Otsego's Mods or Ritchey's Ethos Mod, Heck even my Random Gov't mod will give you a new twist to play with. Plus many more.

All these Mods can be found at moo3.at.

Never tried MOO3 - does it have similar gameplay to MOO2? All the fun stuff like designing your spaceships and tactical combat? Stayed away from it because of the bad press but I hear the MODs have improved it tremendously.

Not all that similar, but still space tbs. Combat is differnet, you have real time combat. I hated Moo3 for along time, but came to find it worth a play now and then. That was only after going to the Strawberry mod and a few other patches from fans and a few tweaks my own.

I will say the first time I send a bunch of armada's against one of the guardians, it was very cool to watch.

Massive fighter fleets from all my carriers going after some AI fleets are neat, especially once it is late game and all the beams go to town. The big problem is the game takes a long time to get to the cool battles and to finish (if doing conquest).

Probably can find it for less than 10 bucks, maybe less than 5 on some of the sites. Still not as good as Moo1 or moo2, but something to play as a change. Learning curve is sort of steep.

Gog.com has it for $9.95 iirc. But I can not say for sure if all the Mods mentioned will work with Gog's version.

If you can get the 2 CD box set of Amazon or Ebay, etc. for $10 it's worth it.

MoO3 was 3 victory conditions: Senate Win, Antaran X, and Sole Survivor.

Senate Win is the shortest/fastest type of game, Antaran X (find all 5 Antaran X's) and research them 1st is middle length. And of course Sole Survivor speaks for it's self. The more AI you put into the game will affect the length of time it takes to eliminate them. Of course you might get eliminated too.

It's as different to MoO2 as MoO2 was to MoO. A lot of ppl wanted MoO2.5 and then got p***ed off because it wasn't (rather shortsighted of them imho).

Yes you can desigh your own ships or use auto design if your in a hurry for a new ship(s). In MoO2 you got 5 starting hull class designs and then later thru techs get Cruisers (iirc) and Doomstars. MoO3 you also get 5 plus light cruiser. But you must build bigger ship yards to get bigger hull sizes and designs. But you will end up with adv. tech and adv. yards 7 more hull sizes.

Of the UOPs Vanilla is more basic to game design with tons of Bug fixes and includes Bhruic's MoO3 Patcher and basic set of patches.

Strawberry starts to add new content. And Tropical is a revamped and extended tech tree plus a whole lot more. It's much much different than playing stock MoO3 even with Bhruic's Patcher.

Too Bad the old forum is gone. So much info and discoveries were lost when Atari shut it down. :(

MoO3 is a fun game no matter what it was Billed or Put out to be by Developer or Fan expectations. But it is one you have to dig into to get the gold it has in it. If you are a FPS or RTS type player.....well........ you probably won't like it. Then again you won't ever know till you try and try again. ;)

Thanks for the replies folks - sounds like I might give it a try. Not at all into FPS or RTS, I prefer TBS.
