Regent is hard (for a noobie)

I don't know what article you read that said to never, ever build wonders. Building wonders is fun. Like I said, if you can build the wonders and still win wars, you should be in good shape. And besides, if you're going for cultural or wonder victories, building wonders is essential. But MAS makes a good point. It's easier to learn to balance your game by starting simple.

I'm not very good with culture, but I'll give you the best information I've got. Markets don't generate culture, but they help generate gold and happiness. Libraries generate science and culture. In fact, libraries are a pretty cheap source of culture. Not as cheap as temples, but temples don't generate science (though they do make a happy citizen content, IIUC), and temples don't generate as much culture, either. I'd say stick with markets and libraries, unless you're going to for a culture win or trying to culture flip the AIs cities. I very rarely build temples, caths and colosseums.

If the AI is generating more culture than you and this concerns you, . . . well, it's hard to generate culture when somebody keeps taking all your wonders, now isn't it? Now that doesn't solve the culture flip problem, but that's another issue.

You seem to get into a lot of wars you don't want. I'm sure someone has said this in another of your threads, but you are giving in to enemy demands, aren't you? That may not be heroic, but it's the basic way of fighting only the wars that suit your plans.

It's the exact opposite, I'm NOT giving in to their demands. To hell with them, they come to me demanding my techs and money...I don't do this to them, they never give me anything for free anyway. So, even though I don't want to get into a fight, if I have the military to support it, yeah, I will. And screw them.:ar15:

Well, this is what he actually wrote: My advice is simple: do not build a single wonder until you have mastered Regent level.

It's from The Four Rules of Wonder Addiction, by Ision.

I know, he doesn't say to never ever build wonders, but, well, I'm not following his advice and everything is ok (so far).

btw - on regent and below, I figure that any wonder I want is mine for the taking. On monarch and emperor, I can get them all if I really want them. Above that, it gets tricky...

I don't like to wage early wars. I tend to concentrate my efforts on expansion first, and then war. So I'm not having a lot of fun. Does anyone have any strategy for that?

I started my first Regent game awhile ago, too, and I felt the same way. I quickly found myself heading down the same road you are (I was surrounded by two countries, both bigger than me, both blocking me in on the East coast of the continent). I've discovered, however, that, if I was to ever get ahead if I was to ever expand beyond a small, coastal country, and if I was to ever freakin' win, I had to fight.

So, I fought. Now I own my own continent, one big island, eliminated the other two countries in the process, and I'm currently warring with Japan for their island. Then, I'll jump from their (soon-to-be-former) island to their continent. I went from being one of the last countries in the game (out of 9) to being the top, and I don't plan on stopping.

Point is, unless you're a master-expansionist early on, you have to be more aggressive, and you have to be aggressive earlier than you'd probably like. Survival of the fittest begins the moment you brush borders with anyone else (as it does in real life).

Hope this helps. ^_^
