Relic trade not working

Just tried to trade a relic with the AI. She agreed and we traded but both relics have now disapeared

Whenever you buy a relic without room for one; it disappears. The same applies to all other forms of art.

yep plenty of room. I was trying to complete a theming bonus so I was expecting the relic I sold to be replaced with the relic I traded but both of them have disappeared.
This has happened twice now. Just tried it again and same thing happened.

Relics don't provide theming bonuses. Are you sure you didn't trade a piece of religious art (goes in an art slot and can earn a theming bonus in a museum) for a relic (goes in a temple or other relic slot)?

I wonder if the game is intelligent enough to swap places if you are trading while all your slots are full. Or it performs the trade actions sequentially meaning the first relic will go into a civ with filled slots so it disappears. The second relic in the trade will transfer fine.

Sure you traded a relic for a relic? The trading window gives no information on what you are actually trading.

I guess you mean an artifact, archaeological artifact. I think i have only ever traded great works as artifacts tend to be easy to get with a big of care unless on your last museum or have too many museums.
I am not aware of them disappearing but I guess I will have to try it out.

Sorry I used the wrong term. They are artefacts. I'm using them in the archaeological museum. I needed one for the theaming bonus so tried to trade but both artefacts disappeared when I traded.
Also, while I'm on the subject. How can you tell and artefact from a relic in the trading window?

If you move your mouse over them you can tell. Normally just the title will do.... the prophets toenails will not be a work of art.

Tested, the exchange worked fine, they were surprisingly happy, straight swap, nothing else involved.

I can never get the AI to trade relics or artifacts. I seem to recall I got a trade in my first couple of games, but now they all ask for ridiculous amounts of GPT as well. Last game with my BFF Hojo, he wouldn't trade. Art, Writings or artifacts. We both hated Vicky, were the sole survivors on our respective continents. I was going for a Science win and even launched a couple missions. I was wanting to practice theming so I was trying to work out trades. I even threw in an extra luxury, but he expected too much cash. So I sent spies and stole them.
