Hi, i made this topic for ideas to balance the religions.

Balanced according to their place in the tech three, and balanced against the other religions you could go for around the same time.

As long as they are not identical once again (that was a pretty big mistake of vanilla IMO, especially considering the different position in the tech tree) ... That would destroy a pretty big part of flavor.

The respective religion should support what's important for them (e.g. Asatru, Tengriism and Naghualism - sp? - should improve the military, Hellenism should be balanced between military - Sparta - and Culture & Science - Athens, all Abrahamic religions should support a strong culture, the "Dharma" religions should reduce criminality, etc.).

And perhaps most importantly, all of this rebalancing might be for naught once the ideas project gets completed.

Druidic Traditions
Druidic traditions is amazing in every way. It does not need any upgrades just maybe some polishing.

Standard bonus - It gives cities a standard culture bonus of 2. This can easily be reduced to 1 since it's the first religion.
Holycity wonder - Extra +1 culture. Perfect.

Temple and monastery - The buildings all give +5% per vegetation resource. Perfect.
Alliance gives - NO BUILDING POLLUTION. This can easily be nerfed to a health bonus.
Legacy - Lots of extra food%. Fine.

World Wonders
NONE. Also fine, don't need any and too early anyway.

Shamanism
Shamanism is perfectly matched to druidism and is also amazing.

Standard - 2 culture a city. Can be changed to 1 as well.
holycity - Extra +1. Perfect.

Temple and monastery - All +5% food. Very good. Could be +4% or +3%. You need to collect some animals but it's sooo worth it.
Alliance - NO BUILDING POLLUTION - as before, a bit too good in the industrial age.
Legacy - Nothing compared to druids? Could give a food bonus as well to be fair.

World Wonders
NONE. No need.

Tengriism
Tengriism is solid but could use a tiny bit of help. Also it really needs to give access to horses. Divine blessing of a free subdued horse or something.

Standard - 1 culture a city. By this time it could be 2
Holycity - An additional 1 culture and 1 gold!. Excellent, gold helps the upkeep for your horse army.

Yurta - 15% military production. Awesome.
Eje Song - Gives the first horse promotion. It's ok.
Tengri Song - Gives second horse promotion. It's ok.
Gesar Song - Only culture. Meh, could instead do something horse related.

Horse trainer - Flavorful but meh, with new costs not worth it.
Ger - Awesome free exp.

Wonders
Could maybe use 1 at this point.

More religions coming up.

Mesopotamism
Great depth, also great overall functionality.

Standard - 1 culture per city. At this point it should definitely be 2 culture.
Holycity - An additional 1 culture and a gold coin. Also a happy face =). Does it need the happy face this early?

Temple of An - gives a healing promotion to everyone who wants it. Always nice.
Temple of Enki - Promo for boats. Fine.
Temple of Enlil - Promo for archers. Quite good actually.
Temple of Inanna - promo for melee units. It's ok.
Temple of Ki - gives access to 4, +5% food buildings - Great.

Ziggurat - Some extra culture building.

Wonders
Hummarabi's stele - FREE COURTHOUSE EVERYWHERE! - This one is amazing, it is however bugged, the free courthouse breaks other courthouses so no supreme court for you later.
Nimrod - Love free exp.
Ishtar gate - it's ok.

I would change Hammurabi's Stele to gives courthouses nationally a 50% cost reduction. Can't break m that way and less insane.

Yoruba
Yoruba comes quite a bit later. It's a bit lackluster. Especially compared to the first 4 religions.

Standard - Only 1 culture. At this point that is just silly.
Holycity - Only 1 goldpiece per city. This needs to be an extra culture and maybe that happy face as well.

Olofin - just basic.
Obatala - -10% upkeep. Love it.
Oggun - Some extra science. Good.
Olokun - Gives +5% food, for fish, crab and clams and a +5% commerce for pearls. Excellent though situational.
Oshosi - +5% food, production and commerce if you have a DEER herd. Awesome.

No Wonders, No extra buildings, No nothing.
The religious buildings are fine, but there need to be other perks like wonders or cost reductions

Shinto
Shinto comes at the same time as Ngaiism and Andeanism. All close behind after Yoruba. Shintoism is focused on maintenance costs and loyalty, which keeps revolutions down.

Standard - Only 1 culture. Needs to be 2.

Temple - 10% maintenance reduction. Always great.
Monastery - some military production. Also good.
Jingu - Another 15% maintenance reduction and a free Honour promotion. Which stops those revolutions.

Wonders
Samurai Castle - Another 50% maintenance reduction for one city. Nice..
Colossus? Shrine - It gives water tiles +1 commerce. Less good in c2c but still good.

Paying less maintenance costs is nice, even though in c2c it means less than in vanilla. When you start building the expensive water and science buildings it adds up really quickly.
Shinto could use some other flavorful additions. A religious unit perhaps like a samurai.

Ngaiism
Ngaiism gives Production, and some food but who cares.

Standard - 1 culture.... really?
Holycity - Another 1 culture.... truly...

Ngai bless - Stepping stone 1.
Ngai Narok Bless - Stepping stone 2. but now you can go build these...
Narok bless COW, PIG, SHEEP. - They all give +5% production and +10%, +5% and +5% food. These are amazing.
Na-Nyoke bless - A free vengeance promotion
Naiteru bless - A free guardian promotion

That's it. No Wonders.
Ngaism isn't very deep. It also gives low culture and you must build 2 useless buildings before getting to build the good ones. Which are just as expensive.
Still you are going to jump through these hoops happily for that production bonus. It isn't too powerful and loses much the further you go along the tech tree.

Andeanism
This is the real deal. Science... Science everywhere!

Standard - 1 culture and 1 science. Perfect!
Holycity - Another 1 culture and 1 coin per city. That's fine.

Temple - +5% science and a free beaker. Wow.
Monastery - +10% science and 2 free beakers. To be fair all monasteries give that +10%
Cathedral - Another +10% Science and 2 more beakers. Awesome.

Wonders
El Dorado - Lots and lots of gold everywhere, to help keep your science at 100%. Very good!
Machu Pichu - Mountains are now good plots in all cities. With lots of mountains around this wonder is absolutely amazing.

Andeanism is simply amazing. the only thing i would change is to make machu pichu a national wonder. So every civ with lots of mountains has access to it if they need it.

More coming later.

As I have said elsewhere
  1. Remove all Animist, Shamanistic, early non-theistic religions

  2. At Animism found your religion by building a Holy Shrine choosing Happy Hunting or Grateful Gathering.
    1. Once built choose the type of lesser temple for your religion from a list of possible benefits. Once you have built one only that type of temple can be built in any of your cities

    2. In each city start a cult= expansion of temple based on local resources

  3. At Polytheism unify your pantheon by building a second Holy Shrine (see Faces of God mod)

Zoroastrianism
This religion is very basic, it has some cool wonders though.

Standard city effect - 1 culture.
Holy city building - 1gold and 10% culture for all cities. This one is decent

Temple - Basic
Monastery - Basic
Cathedral - Basic

Tower of silence - A building that gives some extra health, providing you already have sky funerals. Pretty underwhelming.

Wonders - 4
A palace! - Those are very good.
A +1 trade routes for ALL - Ok
A health and great general wonder - meh
The Seti Pir, Free morale for units in city and -50% upgrade costs and -75% war weariness. 10/10.

The basic 3 building structure is solid in the game but should also be adjusted according to cost and effect.
For this tech level i imagine something like this.

Religion present- +3 culture
Holy City wonder - +10% Culture, +1gold, +1happy per city

Temple - +1happy, +10% culture, +3% commerce
Monastery - +5% culture, +10% science
Cathedral - +1 happy, +25% culture, +3% commerce, +5% production with elephant.

I gave religious buildings a culture% bonus to set them apart from culture buildings. The 50% at cathedrals is out of proportion with bonuses elsewhere in the game so this looks more even.

A look back at Andeanism with this model.

Religion Present - +1culture, +1science
Holy City wonder - +5% science, +1happy per city

Temple - +1happy, +5% culture, +5% science,
Monastery - +15% science
Cathedral - +1happy, +15% culture, +10% Science, +5% production with Llama

Judaism
Stereotypes galore, Jews like money. To make the religion unique and useful in the game we might as well embrace it with good buildings.
My suggestions

Religion present - +1culture, +1gold.
Holy city wonder - +5% gold, +1happy

Temple - +1happy, +5% culture, +5% gold,
Monastery - +10% science, +5% gold
Synagogue - +1happy, +25% culture, +10% gold. +5% commerce with gems.

Hinduism
Hinduism is at the same techlevel as Judaism as the previous religions and should be about the same.
Here is my take on it.

Religion present - 3 culture
Holy city wonder - +10% culture, +1gold, +1happy

Temple - +1happy, +10% culture, +1% keep food on growth
Monastery - +10% science, +1% keep food on growth
Cathedral - +1 happy, +25% culture, +2% keep food on growth, +5% production with cow.

Hindu shrine - +3% culture with cow, +2% culture with elephant

Kemetism
Walk like an Egyptian. same techlevel as well

Religion present - 3culture
Holy city wonder - +10% culture, +1gold, +1happy

Temple - +1happy, +10% culture, +2% wonder production
Monastery - +10% science, +3% wonder production
Cathedral - +1 happy, +25% culture, +5% wonder production, +5% commerce with papyrus.

Obelisk - -2% maintenance
Cat shrine - +3exp for cat units.

The wonders here are odd. Some are world wonders other national. Skipping them for now.

Rodnovera
The first religion of the medieval era. And it's absolutely horrible. It has worse buildings with extra penalties included.
Let's fix that.

Religion present - 5 culture (new era more culture)
Holy city wonder - +10% culture, +1gold, +1happy

Temple - +1happy, +10% culture, -5% military production.
Monastery - +10% science, -5% Military production
Cathedral - +1 happy, +25% culture, -10% military production

These three buildings should cost between 50 and 75% of the base cost.

Possible wonders
- War weariness for enemies +50%
- Culture in all cities +10%, defense +10%
- Foreign trade routes in all cities +25%

Asatru
It's the viking age... that explains the velociraptor.
Asatru is for the melee fanatic looking to bonk some heads. (looking a Tbrd...)

Religion present - 3 culture, 1gold
Holy city wonder - +5% culture, +5% gold, +1 happy

Temple - +1happy, +5% culture, -10% war weariness, +1 melee exp.
Monastery - +5% science, -15% war weariness, +2 melee exp
Cathedral - +1 happy, +15% culture, -25% war weariness, +3 melee exp. +10% military production with prime timber

Asatru has 4 wonders, they seem fine.

Buddhism
Do we have the Daila Lhama as a great person?

Religion present - 5 culture
Holy city wonder - +10% culture, +2happy

Temple - +2happy, +15% culture, +10% War weariness -5%gold
Monastery - +20% science, +15% War weariness, -5% gold
Cathedral - +3 happy, +35% culture, +25% War weariness, -10% gold. Heals human and animals 5%

Cathedral can produce shaolin monks.

Buddhism has 4 wonders, no new ones needed.

Hellenism
This is Sparta! Pankration is that good...

Religion present - 5 culture
Holy city wonder - +10% culture, +1 free specialist per city

Temple - +1happy, +10% culture, +5% GPbirthrate
Gymnasia - +10% science, free PANKRATION promotion.
Cathedral - +1 happy, +30% culture, +20% GP-birthrate

Odeon - +3culture, +3 commerce, -5crime, +10% war weariness

Hellenism has some great wonders too, leaving them be for now.

Naghualism
Blood for the blood god!

Religion present - 5 culture
Holy city wonder - +10% culture, -25% sacrifice anger per city

Temple - +1happy, +10% culture, -25% sacrifice anger
Monastery - +10% science, Units produced have a +10% capture chance
Cathedral - +1 happy, +30% culture, Units have a +15% capture chance, +10% military production with obsidian.

Ballcourt - +3xp for melee, +3xp for throwing

Wonders
Tlaloc - Free sacrifice altar in every city. This one is already perfect =)
Magician - A free golden age and extra trade routes!
Moon - Reduce sacrifice anger to -50%, add 10% culture in city and keep +25% Science.
Sun - Reduce sacrifice anger to -50%, add 10% culture and kep +25% gold.

This religion should be about capturing enemies to sacrifice them to your thirsty gods. I have no idea how to implement an increased capture chance. Maybe a free promotion?

Confucianism
Confusius says, stand on one leg...

Religion present - 5 culture
Holy city wonder - +10% culture, +5% science, +1 happy (the free morale wonder needs to be moved)

Temple - +1happy, +10% culture, +5 education
Monastery - +10% science, +10 education
Cathedral - +1 happy, +25% culture, +10% science +15 education, +10% commerce with TEA.

Wonders
A new wonder to grant the morale benefit, that way you actually have to spend time building it instead of getting it free.
Dosan Sewong - It's great.
Confucian School - Also amazing

Taoism
For Taoism i have an idea. Can we give Taoism 2 temples, monasteries and cathedrals?
This to represent choosing yin or yang for every building.
the buildings would then reflect the choice with their effects.

Jainism
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jainism. Did you know?
This religion is actually very interesting, sadly it is horrific in game.

Religion present - 5 culture
Holy city wonder - +10% culture, +1happy, +15% foreign trade yield

Temple - +1happy, +15% culture, -10% military production, -5% gold, -5 crime
Monastery - +15% science, -15% military production, -5% gold, -10 crime
Cathedral - +1 happy, +35% culture, -25% military production, -5% gold, +? local stability

Jainism is very anti war and appears very tolerant. Can we reflect this in game? For example with Jainism as your state, other civs never dislike you due to religion.

Wonders. I'll think of something tomorrow... Sweet dreams.

Canaaism
Oops skipped it. Not much is known about the Canaanites except for being the bad guys in the bible. They were polytheistic and have some great myths and they have several gods named Baal.
I want the Canaanites to give you a lot of options so they can dwell in more lands...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Canaanite_religion

Religion present - +3 culture
Holy City wonder - +10% Culture, +1gold, +1happy per city

Pantheonic Temple +1happy, +10% culture - Base building required for all others

Shrine of Kothar-wa Khasis - +10% production, -10% military production (craftsman god)
Shrine of Nikkal-wa-ib - - +10% food with fruit (goddess of orchards)
Shrine of Eshmun - -5 disease, +2health (goddess of healing)
Shrine of Marqod - +10 culture (god of dance)
Shrine of Kotharat - +2% keep food on growth, +2 happy (goddess of marriage and pregnancy)

Wonders
Temple of Ba'al hadad - All cities: -5% maintenance, +5% culture, +5% gold, +5% science, +5% commerce, +5%spy, +5% production, +5%food, +1xp for land units. -10% war weariness

Christianity
The medieval religions are very late. almost every civ should have a well established religion or more than 1.
Buildings are now significantly more expensive and thus could be a bit better.

Religion present - 5 culture
Holy city wonder - +15% culture, +5% gold +1happy

Temple - +1happy, +15% culture
Monastery - +10% science, +5% heal humans and animals, +5% commerce with alcohol
Cathedral - +1 happy, +35% culture, +5% culture with lead glass, +4% commerce with gold, +3% commerce with incense, +3% commerce with grapes

Crusade demagogue - -10% war weariness, -5% commerce, -5% production, +10% military production. CAN BUILD CRUSADERS
Citadel - As is, It's fine.
Revivalist church - Keep it the same and it should obselete the demagogue.

Wonders - They have 3 and they are fine.

Islam
I want Islam to be roughly the same as christianity, with requiring different needs.

Religion present - 5 culture
Holy city wonder - +15% culture, +5% gold +1happy

Temple - +1happy, +15% culture
Monastery - +10% science, +5% heal humans and animals, +5% commerce with sheep

Voodoo
Who do? You do.

Religion present - 5 culture

Loa Hwe - +1happy, +10% culture, -25% sacrifice anger, CAN BUILD ZOMBIE WORKERS,
Houn For - +5 hammers, +5% heal humans and animals +5commerce, +5 culture
Voodoo Market - +1 happy, +25% culture, +8 hammers, +5commerce, +2%gold with beads, raw fish, raw meat, incense, drugs and 5 other things to make +20%

Zombie worker - Can't gain xp (is this possible) half the cost of a normal worker. Unlimited amount.

Wonders - Voodoo has a wonder that gets you HELLHOUNDS! which is pretty awesome. Could use another wonder that represents other civs being scared.

Asatru might be nice to also give some Ship bonuses, mean the reason there was a Viking age was because of their Ships, I have no problems with the Existence of Animism and Shamanism, but it should be balanced in such a way You'd most likely be opting out of it once you get any other religion, Not meaning it should be bad, but there should be a good reason to get another religion,
Druidic Traditions, I believe could be something else then a Religion, either be something under the Celtic Cultures (Celts, Galatians, Iberians etc.), or part of Animism, as it's more a form of Practicion than a religion,

the Building Pollution removal of those buildings could be something like -? Air Pollution, in the religions that worship trees,

I kinda wish there was a way to Develop your own religion, give it your own name and one of the logo's, and every step in religion with tech you'd get a chance to pick a bonus fitting to your needs at that point, while keeping the old, or choosing to create Anarchy and throw out the old traditions and pick a set for the new, but that would require a religious Conversion system like Total War where religions are %, and you'd need to slowly root out the old, it would create a semi-organic religion that could be different every time you play though,

the first Tech "Belief Systems" would grant you the ability to create a religion, giving it the choice of 1 culture or 1 happy, and the further you go along in the Tech tree the stronger the bonuses get,
Buildings however wouldn't work well with this :/ and Wonders wouldn't really work at all,

Now I think about it, you probably could use the Civics System to house Religion, with the beliefs, Values and detriments, giving it a more Dynamic aproach

I don't like ahistorical fantasy religions like in Civ 5. It reduces a historically immersive game element to a bunch of stats that you min/max. However if you own the Holy City of a religion, perhaps you should be able to determine what is preached in the temples. The priests could for example preach peace, or tolerance, or duty, or war (Go kill the infidels. Deus Vult!).
