Religion, how does it spread?

They are more aggressive in spreading their religion on higher levels and also only the founder of an religion will bother to come after you with missionaries ;) - But even on Prince - if you have peaceful relations with a religion founder AND not have too many religions in your cities they will eventually send missionaries and ask you to convert lateron. I think they don't bother if you already have more than 3 or so religions in most cities, but I do not know that for sure...
This has been my experience as well. I think the spiritual civs are more aggressive in spreading a relgion they have founded, but I have even seen Qin sending scores of Buddhist missionaries across my borders. It makes sense from a financial perspective to get as many cities contributing the tithe to your holy city so that must be a factor in the AI's algorithm as well.

You're right, I actually just noticed this, in a game where I didn't bother to found a religion myself. It was Tokugawa of all people who started to send missionaries to me!

Hey all,

I've started to pay attention more to the religon aspect of the game - can someone do a brief breakdown on how one can earn gold from a religon?

And what's the deal with the different buildings that can be built for a religon? I end up building them not really paying attention to what they do besides add culture and happiness.

Thanks,
'Cake

Found a religion (by being the first who researches the tech providing it). Produce a Great Prophet (by building a temple and assigning priest specialists in a city, or by building a religious wonder like Stonehenge). Move the prophet to the holy city of your religion (this is where the religion was founded, on the map its religion sign has a small golden star attached to it). Let the prophet build the holy building of your religion. Afterwards, you will get 1 gold for each city in the world that has your religion, as long as you own the holy city.

That's basically what they do, providing culture and happiness (and they allow to employ priest specialists, which can be used to produce great prophets).

temples produce 1 happy and 1 culture
cathedrals (Pagoda, Synagogue etc. - the buildings allowed with theology) produce +50% culture and 2 happy if state religion and 1 happy for incense
missions produce +10% research (until scientific method) and 2 culture and allow to build missionaries
shrines (only in holy city buildable with great prophet) give 1 gold per city with that religion in the world

Yep, i've had that, bloody annoying too, i had made hinduism into the world leader, 40percent global spread, along comes saladin, i open borders with him, he plants his buddhist missionary in an insignificant city, 3 turns later, he demands i convert, i say no, 3 turns later he closes borders with me..
what a jerk!
