I either found a religion or adopt a religion from an favoured ally

If you build a monastry for that religion you can produce missionaries

They then spread the religion to your cities. You can then build temples which reduce unhappiness

You can build temples for all religions but if you are warmonger you won't want to build temples which undermine the will of your population to go to war with rival civs

Religion provides:

- Happiness (only if state religion or using the Free Religion civic)
- Culture +1 culture, +5 culture if holy city (only if state religion or using the Free Religion civic)
- Ability to build Monestaries (requires Meditation technology) +2 culture +10% research, and Temples (requires Priesthood technology) +1 culture +1 happiness
- Gold - you get +1 gold from each city with religion X if one of your cities is the holy city of religion X and a great prophet build the religion X shrine there
- Ability to have a state religion, which provides these benefits
--- Positive diplomacy modifiers with other civilizations with the same state religion (negative if different)
--- Benefits from religious civics (except Free Religion)

There are a few other benefits, but this is the basic gist of it.

There are three main things to remember about religion in Civ4.

1) Any civ sharing a state religion with you will like you more - all civs with a different state religion than you will like you less (or hate you)

2) Having your state religion in a city allows a city to benefit from the effects of the religion civics - These are all quite powerful

3) If you found a religion (first to discover that tech - meditation for buddhism, theology for christianity) then you will have that religions holy city. If you control a holy city then you can get a great profit to build a shrine there and it will produce 1gpt (gold per turn) for every city on the map with that religion.

There are a few more complexities but those are the main points.

You can spread religions via missionaries to civs you have open borders with.

Also, there are religious civics, some of which only give you benefits if you have a state religion and the city has the state religion present.

Organised Religion: Don't need monasteries for building missionaries (nice), +25% production for buildings in cities with state religion present (sweet especially early on when you need granaries, courthouses, etc.)

Theocrarcy: No spread of non-state religion, and +2 xp for troops built in cities with state religion present

Pacifism: +100% great person birth rate in cities with state religion present. This is probably my favourite one.

I never used to play religion in my games. Never really understood it.

However, a lot of my games are now based round getting buddism, and the benefits of influence happiness and economy.

i personally think that founding a religion is not much of a benefit becuz i can always conquer an enemy's holy city(s). the problem is to get a Great Prophet to build a shrine in one of those cities. one shrine is usually enough for me since i have other things to focus on.
