Premise #1: My civ is entirely converted to another civ's religion.
Premise #2: I subsequently eliminate that same civ militarily.

Would it then be possible for me to win a religious victory by
spreading the dead civ's religion?

(I'd hate to go through all that trouble just to find out, later, that
a dead civ wins the game, and I helped him do it!)

You have to be the founder of a religion in order to obtain a religious victory (and the victory has to be your religion sweeping the map, not a religion that you adopted or that was imposed on you).

That said, the dead civ doesn't win either -- it just means no one has satisfied the requirements for a religious victory. In fact, that can be a great way to avoid losing to another civ's imminent religious victory -- eliminate that civ before it completes the requirements for a religious victory.

Basically, if you're going for a religious victory, having your religion be removed from the game early is the equivalent of being rushed early and having your empire destroyed; You lost. Except in this case you could pivot to another victory type. but you need to make sure your religion actually takes root in the world in order to win. If it's wiped out, you lose the religious game.

Both replies, excellent answers, so far.

I was thinking more of pivoting to a religious victory. Obviously, that won't work now.

I was actually going for a domination victory. I did get a religion, thinking that I'd pay attention to
it if I needed it, for defense against a religious victory..Whoopsie. Too late. I had none of my own
religion left by the time I started paying attention ;)

I also like the previous poster's idea that I could use the dead civ's religion defensively, in theory.
Though, it would present some tricky problems splitting resources to apply to those two different
objectives.
