How exactly does Religious Victory work?

I was happily building up an army of adepts and swordsmen to attack my huge neighbor when on turn 164, out of nowhere, they win a Religious victory. This was about 6-7 turns before my attack was to commence. I have included the save. Press enter to lose.

What did I do wrong? How can I avoid this in the future?

I have since given up on the Amurites and went the opposite direction with the Dovielo (sp?). Early conquest seems to be much more effective.

If you control the holy city of a religion with 80% on the religious screen :religion: you win a religious victory.

Simple as that ;)

The best way to prevent them from winning a religious victory is to keep an eye on the religion screen if you notice everyone converting and be prepared to raze the holy city if it gets around 60-70%.

Thanks for the tips and the clarification, but if you look at the victory conditions screen in the save, there is no way to see this coming. There is absolutely no indication that my opponent is about to win. None. The frequent "FoL has spread to City X" were the only real indicator that I was about to lose. I guess I just feel that I was doomed to being with in this particular game.

EDIT: Ahh, the religious screen. It shows FoL at 79%. There has to be some way to prevent this other than founding and spreading a religion.

EDIT EDIT: If I were to capture this holy city when it is at 75% then spread the religion to my cities for the extra 5%, would I then win? If so, I may have found a way to win my Doviello game I though was doomed. Religious victory seems a little broken. I think it needs another condition or two.

Yes, you would win and it is a little strange. It would be nice for more conditions for a religious victory.

You'd have to take the Holy City and convert to that religion. But yes, you would win that way.

It can be HARD to accomplish the 80% though. I rushed RoK and spread it as much as I could once and was unable to break the 77% mark because FoL got discovered before I could get my disciples where they needed to go. If I had the Spiritual trait I would have won that game, but instead I was forced to wait for Inquisitors, or change tactics.

In my current game as the Doviello, the Khazad founded and spread RoK. They only had 2 cities. While they are busy spreading and founding the religion, I'm busy with my early conquests. I absent mindedly left a city on their borders with only 1 beastman guarding it. They declare, take the city, lose it the next turn, and a few turns later their holy city feels the wrath of my Iron Battlemasters with CR3. I now control the holy city of the religion practiced by 60ish percent of the world.

My original plan was for conquest/domination, but the score leader has Rangers now, and despite being only STR 7, they are DESTROYING my battlemasters (I had to switch to military state and conquest just to keep my cities full of units). Anyway, now that I control the dominant religion I'm thinking about trying for peace and just finishing spreading the religion. It's cheesy and may not work but I don't see any other way to win. Here is the save if anyone is interested.

Wow... just... wow. That's not something you see the AI pull off every game. Yeah, hats off to the spectacular AI. From personal experience I can tell you how hard it is.

maybe there should be a bonus for the person who owns the holy city for controlling the world with religion...
at 50%, +1 culture in cities with the religion
at 60%, +1 gold in cities with the religion
at 70%, +1 production in cities with the religion
at 80%, of course... you win
