So having tried Springtime with a Citrus play recently, I was reminded just how painful it can be to plantation out citrus.

Its actually a great initial tile, so you don't get too much for taking it out. It also tends to grow in both jungle and forest, so often you have to do a mining pickup to hit your monopoly.

So I was pondering this opener with a citrus start, and wanting people's thoughts.

1) After getting initial Trapping + Pottery, go Trade with the intention of getting Renewal.
2) If Renewal is lost, go with Wisdom or Commerce as backup plan (early Trade helps both of this a decent amount).
3) If Renewal is a go, the plan is to avoid any plantation on citrus. Instead, gain the renewal bonuses while focusing on other aspects. Focus on more markets instead of workers for this play.
4) Once you have a large amount of workers and all citrus tiles for monopoly accounted for....proceed to plantation all citrus at once to get monopoly bonus.

So theoretically while I'm losing the big science from the monopoly I am recouping some of that with renewal and picking up culture along the way. I get a strong market based economy going, and then do a large plantationing all at once to minimize the loss from progressively taking out the jungles/forests.

Any thoughts on this one?

I did this for Cocoa a few games ago.

You don't need to connect all of the luxury, just a majority monopoly. That's usually 5 on standard size maps. You can leave the remaining tiles jungled. Monopolies affect the resource with or without a plantation.

If you have a city that must be settle on top of forest/jungle, then you could put it right on the luxury. This connects it and chops minimum jungle.

You could try a strategy of only connecting 3 luxuries and then using East India Company. I might consider this for sugar but cocoa or citrus have such strong monopolies that I want them early.

Be aware that renewal's current faith is very low and a market is 110 hammers for 0 faith.
