Repairing a scratched DVD-RW

I googled everywhere to see if it was okay to use my CD repair thingy to fix a scratch on my DVD-RW, but I couldn't find anything on Google. I think that DVD-RWs have something physically different but I dont know.

I have a bunch of files on it, but when I try to use Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier, the disc gets "stuck" (the light keeps coming on and I can hear it trying to spin.)

This is an ancient trick I was taught back in the olden days when they had music on things called "Compact Discs..."

...anyways, rub a small amount toothpaste into the CD around the scratches gently and then wash it off. It was like frikkin magic, I swear. Never tried it with a DVD....so don't blame me if this ruins your DVD!

Tried it. The disc still worked, but I only recovered a few files that I couldn't get before. (I lost about 50-100, they're pictures which were hard to find.)

Yeh, but it was rather messy in the bathroom and mom would be very unhappy if I did it again.
I decided to let it sit overnight. Now it's copying just fine. Strange,

Just dont accidentally try burning anything to that dvd. You're probably going to hose your dvd burner if you do that with a toothpasted dvd (Cousin did it once, smelled pretty bad)

Imho alcohol does a better job than toothpaste.

rubbing alcohol would clean the surface of the disk, it wouldnt actually fill in the gaps caused by scratches.
