Hi there!

This is a thread either requesting a link to, or if necessary, the creation of a mod for better handling barbarian experience.

Now, I know that barbarians stop giving experience after 30xp in an attempt to prevent them being gamed for experience, however, barbarians aren't exactly slouches in combat, particularly with raging barbarians turned on, so it seems weird that units going to all the effort of clearing away large build ups of barbarians get so little return, especially when we consider that's generally easier (and often more convenient) to game experience from a city-state instead as they're a lot more predictable.

I'm hoping some good mods already exist for simply removing the barbarian experience cap, in which case please do provide a link! I've searched but been unable to find anything that simply removes the limit.

However, I've also been thinking about a better way to handle barbarian experience in general. What I'm thinking is that barbarian units would gain experience each turn, and also for combat, allowing them to become increasingly for dangerous.

Upgrades for barbarians would likely be similar to those of regular units of their type, except with some trimmed out, and the ability to promote themselves added in. This means that a barbarian brute that has been wandering around long enough may become a spearman, and later a pikeman and so-on. Also included would be city attack bonuses for all unit types, making them very dangerous if in range of your cities. Upgrades would be limited by the most advanced civilisation, such that they can't become the most advanced unit presently available (for example, if a civilisation can build infantry, then barbarians can only build musketmen).

Another possibility would be that a barbarian camp may be upgraded by captured civilian units, allowing it to produce barbarians with starting experience (similar to a barracks etc.) or even gain a bombard attack, making their camps much harder to shift, and providing experience as per a normal bombard attack.

However, unlike now, barbarians would always start out as either brutes or archers, meaning that a new (low experience) encampment is easier to get rid of, especially in the later game.

For gaining experience, instead of a hard limit, it would simply be a comparison of experience. Quite simply, if a unit has less experience than a barbarian unit, then it will gain 2xp for each attack, if it has less than double the barbarian's experience, then it will gain 1xp, otherwise it will gain nothing.
