Research

I do think that you've missed one useful generally applicable tip though:

Try to get the AI to do research for you. Avoid researching techs that they will probably research first and then trade for those technologies.
Yes indeed, that should be included also. Plus the "harvesting" of the freebee-techs of the scientific AIs, which more or less goes into the same direction.

If you are really having trouble paying for the last few lux resources, you can pillage your own luxes so that you are buying luxes that only give 1 happy face. Then re-road your own.
Good point. Never thought of this before...!

Lanzelot - how many core cities did you have?
You can download the final .sav file from the current COTM138 results table: http://gotm.civfanatics.net/results/index.php (Just click on the link in the "Date" field.)
Basically on that particular map (and after Courthouses and Police Stations are in place) I would consider all cities within distance 10 to be of "core" status. So that would be all first and second ring and even some of the "third ring" cities (although there is no clear third ring in this case), a total of 25 cities.

FTFY ;)

Shuuuurely not in the Pop6-ers? You usually only need to keep max. 3 farmers content/happy, which you should easily be able to do with only 3-4 Lux-resources (without a Market). And even in the Pop12-ers (wet or previously Duct'ed by the AI), 5-6 Luxes should be enough to keep the farmers happy...

Are you often short on Luxes? What map-settings do you habitually play on?

Yes, you're right. Thanks for the fix. I meant to write "all the required" not simply "all."

Markets in Farm Cities: TBH, I usually stick with a build order without examining the details of city placement. And that sort of "paying attention" is exactly what this discussion is intended to build in the OP. Often my farms are wet / rivered and might grow to size 7 before they run out of workable tiles. I have the habit of cash-rushing Markets before I get to Magnetism, so it happens more towards the middle of the game.

And yes, I usually only have 3-4 luxuries at that point in my expansion. I always play normal sized maps, random age and wetness; often continents. I will mount a military offensive to take more luxuries as I move into the Industrial Age. After I research Replaceable Parts, I upgrade a whole bunch of foot soldiers to Infantry and mount a military campaign to get resources that I don't have. Invading the other continent will depend a lot on whether I can get there quickly with Galleons or have to wait for Transports.

Even if that obscure town 4 or 5 rings from my Capital will only benefit by 1 extra Beaker by building a Library, I'll usually build it, just because I like the idea of having a Library in all my towns. For neatness and equality.
I agree. It's your world and you should make it what you want. I also like to have some defenders studying war in my libraries so that they can rush out to fight the enemy if necessary. A beautiful town with libraries, marketplaces, and universities can look very ugly if it suddenly starts flying an enemy flag.

If you are building universities in any settlement, then you should make sure that those settlements donnot stay at town size, they should reach city size soon and metropolis size once possible. Add courthouse and police station, this will make corruption drop to less then 70%, which will mean that universities will grant you a bigger gain in beakers than their maintenance of 2 gtp.
