hi all
i've done some searching through the forum archives and haven't found an answer to my dilemma, so here goes:
SHORT VERSION:
how do i either A) get the full 1600x1024 res w/o choppy ani, or B) get the original 1280x1024 res w/o stretching?
LONG VERSION:
i use an apple cinema display (21") on a Windows system; when i was using Win2000, i was able to make full use of the screen by using the "keepres=1" line in the civilization3.ini file. i was playing 1600x1024 (a very cool experience if you ever get a chance!).
so my problem is that ever since i upgraded to WinXP (complete reinstall of all software to blank hard drives), Civ3 will play at my higher resolution, but the animations have become extremely slooooow. moving a unit takes about 1 second or more per square; fireworks for WLTK day take about 3 times as long. it bogs the game down a lot. FYI all other aspects of game work fine (dip screens, tech screens, city management, etc.).
so for a while i decided to simply play at 1280x1024 (or whatever the standard size is), and things were cool.
BUT, i just recently installed a new soundcard, and for some reason it bonked my video card driver, so i had to install new drivers for both sound & video.
now civ gives me two options for resolution (depending on how i tweak the ini file): play at 1600x1024 with excruciatingly slow animations, or play the 1280x1024 STRETCHED to fill a 1600x1024 screen (very annoying). the option for standard 1280x1024 is completely gone, and i have tried all sorts of ini tweaks in all sorts of combinations:
keepres=1
video=1024
videomode=1024
refresh=60
none of these makes a difference except keepres=1, which as i stated works great except for the animations (which i want to keep).
so what do i do? how do i either A) get the full 1600x1024 res w/o choppy ani, or B) get the original res w/o stretching?
i feel totally stuck. any help is appreciated, but please don't bother posting if you're gonna tell me to change my OS or reinstall everything. not gonna happen.
my specs:
AMD Athlon 1GHz
KT-7 RAID mobo
512 RAM
Hercules Prophet II Ultra AGP video 64MB RAM (DVI)
MadDog 6.1 audio
Civ3, latest patch
WinXP all updates, including SP1
and no, i don't have a lot of crap running "under the hood." i try to keep things to a minimum. also, i do multimedia on this system (photoshop, audio recording, etc.) without any problems. only civ3 animations give me problems. ugh.
thanks a lot, sorry for the long post.
