I have been playing my civ3 game and i finally had gotten to the steam power research. When it finished i started looking for coal. There is one source of coal on the entire standard size map. This coal happens to be the furthest possible place away from my cities. This is completely wrong. I have never had this much trouble with resources (it was the same thing with iron on the same map). Why in the world would all of the resources on the map not be anywhere near my cities???

Are you absolutely sure there is only one coal? Hit control-shift-m to get a better look around. Do control-shift-m again to return the view to normal.

The number of resources depends on the number of civs in the game, are you playing with only a few opponents? That could be why there is only one coal, but it won't help you solve the problem.

I guess you'll just have to go take the one source of coal.

First, there is no cheat involved in the distribution of resources, but the number of resources (and placement) is random, so some games there may be very few or even none of a resource. Players often overlook a resource or two, so ctl-shift-M is a good help.

The AI does cheat by knowing from turn one that the tile where coeal eventually popped up is more valuable to settle close to than other similar tiles though.

This can't happen unless you are playing with only one opponent. Try using Ctrl-Shift-M to look for coal under cities, and make sure you really have the full world map.

Are you sure? AFAIK, there is a number in the editor for each resource that (indirectly) says how many of that type there should normally be for each civ in the game.

Notice the "normally" - because there is a random factor involved which means that sometimes you get more and sometimes you get less of that resource, and sometimes you don't get any at all! There have been posted savegames of unmodded games with absolutely no coal or oil on the map at all.

The Ctrl +shift + M helped a ton. Thanks a lot. I found 2 more sources. But it doesn't help much cause they aren't even close to me but i guess that's the challenge in this great game. Thanks for the help
