resource question

Hey guys,
I'm new and completely addicted, but I still don't understand one of the finer points of the game. How do you use resources such as dye, fish, and whale? Is it automatically harvested when your city is built near it or is there some actual command to manually do it? I never really understood how to benefit from the specific resources that you can unlock.

Build a city near it, and the tile its on will be workable for that tiles food/production/trade + the resource's food/production/trade

You forgot something very important: you need to research the appropriate tech to be able to use that resource.

So, to the OP: the only thing you'll need to do to be able to use a resource is to research the technology that will "unlock" it. For instance, if you want to be able to use dyes, you need to research Monarchy.
Once you've researched it, no need to specifically assign your workers, in general the AI is smart enough to do it
