Merry Christmas! :)

I've just started playing in marathon mode and I've encountered some really odd problems. I hope that some gurus here can tell me whether this is a bug or not. I've been a pretty seasoned player myself but just can't seem to find the answer to this problem.

In the game that I've attached below, I should have 2 Ivory and no Oil, since I just discovered Combustion and has not completed any Wells yet. As for the Ivory, I have 1 city planted on top of an Ivory and another camp built on the other resource. So, by right, I should have 2 Ivories and no Oil on my resources list.

Instead, the list shows that I have no Ivory and 1 Oil. Why is this happening? I've tried destroying the Ivory camp and rebuilding it but it doesn't fix the problem. As for the Oil, I have no idea where it is coming from. I have checked this thing for more than 5 times, fearing that I might have miss count, but I am pretty confident of my counting ability. :D

An additional note: I was able to trade Ivory (with Sitting Bull) to get the Ivory on my resource list (listed on the right of the city screen).

Please let me know whether it is really a bug or is it just ineptness of my counting ability.

Best regards,
Doom Scythe

Your ivory became obsolete with the industrialism tech. The AI will give you obsolete resources for free though, so you can enjoy their benefits that way.
The oil comes from the fort north of Ur.

Thanks for pointing out Industrialism makes Ivory obsolete. Does this mean that a resource only becomes obsolete if the player that has that resource does not have the obsoleting tech? Meaning we can obtain benefits of obsolete resources through trading?

Also, Oils from forts? I just checked the Civilopedia and it does not say anything about Forts providing oil.

IIRC, If you plant a fort on a resource before it becomes available, then when it does become available you get it for free.

A fort will provide whatever resource is on that tile, assuming it is within your borders and you have the necessary tech (combustion in your case). It is a common strategy to build forts on oil tiles after researching scientific method (which reveals the oil), then once you get combustion you will instantly have access to the oil without waiting x turns to build the wells.

Regarding obsolete resources: in your case, the ivory on your land became inaccessible after researching industrialism. Sitting Bull does not yet have that tech and has therefore still access to the ivory on his land. Once he gets industrialism too, he wont be able to use or trade that ivory anymore. What I think is a bug is that the AI is usually willing to give you an obsolete resource for free (meaning obsolete for you but not obsolete for the AI!), because they think you cannot use it, while you will actually still get the happiness bonus from it :crazyeye:

Yup, when Sitting Bull gave the Ivory to me for free, I did find it odd. Anyway, many thanks for the reply, I learned something today. :)
