Reviving A Dead Civilization?

I was just playing a game as Japan, and after conquering Egypt entirely (so it had no more cities and gave me the "Civilization Destroyed" icon), I went on to attack Russia. Russia had attacked Egypt earlier too, and had conquered Elephantine before I finished Ramesses off.
Upon conquering Elephantine from Russia, it said "Would you like to liberate this city, and give it back to Egypt?" I said no, since I wanted the city, but I'm wondering what would have happened if I liberated it. Can you revive a dead civ?

Yep, Ramsesses would come back to the Game :) and he would owe u big time for liberating him ;)

Weird though, thats's what i thought but the other day i liberated Alexander and after a few turns he was guarded with me. I would have assumed that he would be friendly till the end and vote for me in case i chose a diplo victory.

They will vote for you, but they will also hate you. They hate you because of the negative modifiers that supposedly keep them competitive such as warmonger hate, VC competitiveness, CS competitiveness, land envy, etc., etc. The negative modifiers you had before they were conquered still exist when you liberate them, and now you just laid siege to one of their cities and have a bunch of units in their borders. The scenario in the OP would also result in the "you conquered their original capital" modifier, guaranteeing a denouncement. So, you can revive a dead civ, if you think it's worth having yet another opponent that hates you back in the game.

You can do it, but dont bother. As NotSure says, they'll hate you for close borders and other nonsense.
The only advantage is that they'll vote for you in a UN for a diplo victory, but it's better to just paying a city state shortly before the vote.

In one game I have some happiness problem and I don't want to have many cities. That's why I liberate China and then give/sold them 3 or 4 conquered cities. But in that game after all this things China declare war for me with their cho-ko-nus when I already have tanks.

Don't lie man there is a bug in the game even if you declare 1 time against the civiliation who conquered you're friend so you aren't considered a warmonger and you liberate a civ that liked you before but has been conquered they denouncer you for no reason.

That's not a bug, that's bad game design.

In multiplayer last nite in 6 FFA, my cousin got elimi-dated ealry. So shortly after I libirated one of his cities and he tried to rejoin. Game crashed for everyone. Not sure if that is possible.

If you liberate a civ, can you then declare and take the city again? In a game a few patches ago I liberated Ghandi's capital but then realized i could only win through domination but it wouldnt let me declare on him for some reason.

From what I understand, it is indeed a bug. Apparently they accidentally add a bunch of what I will call "hate points" when you liberate a civ; it's supposed to subtract "hate points".

It is enough that Gandhi loses his capital once for you to win a domination victory, is it not?

I do it all the time just so I can say I took them out.

Apparently they are coming out with an expansion for Civilization 5 so we'll see if they can indeed revive a dead Civilization. Lol.

Even if you dig them out of the ground, they will HATE you.

So better is to keep these cities and continue playing the game.

I like liberating cities, but it never pays off with happiness. There should be a fix wherein bringing a civilization back to life outweighs having territory they covet or being warmongering (in the sense that you are at war with the person who killed them, conquered their cities, and gave them back to the dead civ). Would this be especially hard to do?
