RFC - Is it possible to hold a city from new civs?

I was playing as Maya and expanded up into Mexico. I knew the Aztecs were coming, so I built a huge army to prepare to fight them off so that I wouldn't lose my cities.

So, the Aztecs show up and I was up to feudalism so my longbows were able to fight them off... but then my troops started "defecting". Every turn I lost one longbow until eventually the whole city was abandoned. What a bunch of crap I thought. It's fine if a handful want to "join the rebels' or whatever, but to have your whole army desert even after you've WON a decisive victory... so stupid.

I thought that was unfair so I went into world builder and added a bunch of longbows back into the city (no more than I started with), I figured fine, if they want a few extra units to regroup and try again, then so be it. But it just kept happening, over and over, every turn I'd lose one unit, so I'd go into WB and add them back in, etc. Eventually I got frustrated and just deleted the Aztecs completely, which finally got it to stop.

But that's not fun. Why can't they accept that they can't take the city from me and go settle somewhere else? They had like 3-4 settlers who just sat there, waiting for me to "give" them the city. Screw you guys, go settle in Arizona, I was here first.

Anyways, is there any way to get it to stop while the civ is still alive? Or will you always lose 1 unit per turn from their "home territory" until you finally lose everything if you don't get rid of them completely?

But what could I have done in that situation to play it through "fair" without using world builder? Or is it not possible? I mean, I guess the only way the Aztecs were going to get the city was to cheat by removing all my units without fighting me, so I cheated back and got rid of all theirs... lol

Voilà! You resumed RFC mod. It IS not fun. It is a strait-jacket mod. A linear play is on the line.

The idea behind that is tied to the concept of civ births on different dates. Knowing older civs would have a definite advantage over newer ones just born (just like a civ4 game early actions have much more impact than later ones), Rhye made sure to allow new civs to live with a fair chance by giving them units, settlers and bonuses to offset their late arrival. And finally, a defection concept to thwart humans who would abuse immediately their early buildup in units to eradicate their birth instantly. At some point, it was like that I think in the early stages of RFC. Now, the defection system is implemented to make the human think twice before refusing the flip.

The point is: don't settle your cities in their core area unless you are either prepare military to both sustain an early loss in units and eradicate them fast. Or for short term goals like a strategic resource (stone, marble, etc.). When the new civ rises, you have given the choice to either give up the cities you settled in their core areas or refuse, which ensues immediately for 8 turns with the defection system. And during these 8 turns, usually, it is best your units are far far outside both your borders and their core areas, which minimizes the RNG in defection. After 8 turns, the defection stops and you can manage a regular war with the nascent new civ.

Good luck, but I see more frustration than anything from RFC. I suggest another mod. It is not amusing to play along defined lines. Civ4 should be a strategic game allowing multiplicity of plays, not a guidebook with one way to win. :)

I spent most of my time as the Mayans building up an army just to crush the Aztecs, and when they did finally show up and founded their capital, I moved in with an army and took them out before they even managed to found a second city. No losses here, except I was a bit behind in tech than usual.

Yeah I was the Persians and I was getting ready to put those pesky little Arabs out of their misery before they even began to have a chance. I wasn't even as lucky as you they destroyed my units in the Arabian Peninsula and took Jerusalem and Babylon from me. 600 years later they gave me back Babylon as a "sign of respect" and turn proceeded to declare war on me the very next turn. I love RFC lol
