Rik's GalCiv2 review

In windowed-mode it works a lot better.

I managed to grab about half of the territory. To fill up the gaps and to "connect" resources I think I'll need Starbases, so I switch to constructor-building mode.

I now notice the Tab-key will jump towards my next ship. That's nice so I don't have to search for them. I still have to take newly produced ships out of orbit. I need to find a way to spot all ships in orbit as I've lost some turns for this. And I need my Constructors for Starbases.

I build 1 constructor too many (as I kept 1 in orbit unnoticed and the Arcean Empire stole one of my planets. I upgraded him to a freighter and send him away. This type of upgrading is something that I like in the game.

I also dsicover that the 2 crashes to Desktop caused strange effects. First of all, the game crashed during the UP meeting and when the autosave got me back the UP was over. Furthermore; I lost some Industry because of it.

Apart from those things, the game is nice to play. It does provide fun and a sort of "1 more turn" element. Even if I don't know when a turn actually ends. Sometimes when I move a ship, the game seems to go to the next turn without the green "turn button" being pressed. I'm going to have to be careful with those things.

Another thing to be careful about is the scroll-bars. They work crappy and aren't really user-friendly. Either my mouse-wheel needs to do overtime -or- the drag-and-drop way has to be used. But using that drag-and-drop way the scroll bar slips away from under the mouse regularly, which means we have to go back with the pointer and drag further from where we left it behind.

What I do like is the scroll-bars becoming active as soon as the mouse-pointer is in their section. No move, click and scroll, just move and scroll. That works very comfortably.

This I don't understand. How can I have a military rating of 0 when I have some military ships around ??

Rounding. The average military will be a 100. This means you have less than one percent of the military strength of the average player in your game. This means that you there are some who are more than 100 times as strong as you. At the higher difficulties, this is a VERY bad position to be in.

There's no way they were 100 times stronger than I was at the time. I had build some military ships and I compared my fleet to theirs; about the same. I think there must be a delay in it.

Anyway; Military seems to be ok now, with 170. For the first time I am ranked the most powerful. Not surprising when you see the teritory I have. And not with fighting; only colonising and starbasing. Military is simply for "just in case".

i gota get this game, can you post some pictures of the design process of the ships?

"I still have to take newly produced ships out of orbit"

At the beginning of your turn there's a GNN report, which will include new ship production. After you close that you'll notice some icons along the right edge of your screen, including ones for newly build ships. If you right-click an icon for a new ship it'll launch it from orbit and take you to it.

I mention this because I had the same problem at first and this little trick makes your galciv life so much better!

(I'm a galciv2 fan and I'll admit that I didn't know this without spending a lot of time at the galciv2 official forums.)

Another option is rally points, which are handy in a number of ways, including causing ships to autolaunch and travel. There's a little tiny button on the top edge of the main interface (main map screen) at the left hand side. So, you might create a rally point for constructors if you're going to build and upgrade a new starbase.

Along with rally points there are some handy governors that allow you to change the destination of ships in progress (so maybe you decide on a new constructor gathering spot - you can change the rally point for all ships enroute to the old spot with a few governor clicks) or where colonies are rallying. Or maybe you get new drives and make faster constructors - you can use the other governor to change all colonies producing the old constructor to be making the new constructor in a few clicks.

Yes it is.

I like to take time for this review as I feel that rushing it doesn't do this excellent game enough credit. My time is limited thus this review will be in large pieces with periods of no-play in between.

I think the main goal of a review -to assess if a game is good or bad- has been accomplished already. This game is at least 8 out of 10, and most likely 9 out of 10 or even 10 out of 10. I don't know yet since I haven't been able to test the adaptibility to the human player of the AI yet.
