I haven't been very active in this forum so forgive me if this has been discussed already.

Instead of the current system of two road-types (roads and railroads), Civ4 could have 5 levels of roads, one default road and 4 more to be researched later.

I think they should go something like this

1 - Paths, 2x movement , small trade bonus

2 - Dirt road, 3x movement, small trade bonus

3 - Stone/paved road, 4x movement, medium trade bonus

4 - Railroad, 8x movement, large trade bonus, small shield bonues

5 - Super Highways, infinite movement, large trade bonues, medium shield bonus

I think this system is better and would produce a more realistic progression of transportation.

Something I'd like to see in advanced tech is the ability to bridge water.

Like the channel tunnel or the huge bridges of Japan linking the main islands, I'd like to see an Advanced Infrastructure tech where two lands with one water square can be bridged or tunnelled under.

A Gibraltar bridge is being proposed at this very moment, imagine what it will do for the economies of Spain and North Africa when it is finally built?

The cost will be monumental, say that of a wonder improvement and only one square can be bridged.

Nobody moves tanks or other heavy military equipment long distances by highway. It's too much wear on the tanks and the highway.

Perhaps the final one should be a railroad/highways and the previous be just railroad/paved road with the earlier railroad a bit more primitive.

Because this thread is titled "Road Ideas" I have something to post. If a tile is a mountain, volcano, or jungle or any other terrain that hinders improvements this is what should happen to developement in the tile in relation to roads.

If a road is completed on a troublesome terrain tile then all improvements built on the tile may be built in the time required if the tile was a non-troublesome terrain tile. If no road is present, then improvement building is normal. This effect remains when railroad is built too.

This idea definately increases usefulness of roads which is usefull in larger world maps. Makes micromanaging in these areas less time consuming so workers can move onto something else to work on.
