So I was screwing around with Civilization IV, listening to my custom soundtrack of 1980's heavy metal, and I had an idea. I want to replace the Leonard Nimoy blurbs with short clips of rock and metal songs.

Couple questions. First, is this possible (or easy)? Secondly, if I used actual, yet short (in the neighborhood of five to fifteen seconds a piece) clips of songs, would I be able to upload it (or even discuss it) here?

AudioDefines.xml
<SoundData>
<SoundID>SND_TECH_MYSTICISM</SoundID>
<Filename>Sounds/Tech/Tech_Mysticism</Filename>
<LoadType>DYNAMIC_RES</LoadType>
<bIsCompressed>1</bIsCompressed>
<bInGeneric>1</bInGeneric>
</SoundData>

Then go into the sounds folder in the Civ4 asset directory, then the tech folder, and you will find the MP3s of the tech sounds. You can put in new mp3s (of rock music, lets say) and alter the above information to this:

<SoundData>
<SoundID>SND_TECH_MYSTICISM</SoundID>
<Filename>Sounds/Tech/Tech_Mysticism_Rock_Music</Filename>
<LoadType>DYNAMIC_RES</LoadType>
<bIsCompressed>1</bIsCompressed>
<bInGeneric>1</bInGeneric>
</SoundData>

Hope that helps.

Cool, that does not look too hard.

Now, am I right in assuming that the tech_MP files are for multi-player? They do not have the nifty quotes, they just go 'you have discovered such-and-such'.

I figured out how to change the tech quotes, CIV4GameTextInfos.xml , so I am going to change those to reflect the new things.

Finally, I am not entirely sure how to operate or create a mod. Do I just put the files in their respective locations in the 'customassets' folder and then they will work? If I wanted to distribute it, could I just zip-up the specifically changed directories and just put that up?

terrible horrible idea.

Thanks for your support. :)

Anyway, I added a few more songs to the list. Now begins the arduous task of picking up the large amount of song ideas I do not readily have access to, before I start making judgements. :)

Just so you know, this will be illegal if released in most major Western nations. The music is copyrighted, of course, and the fact that it's non-profit, attributed, and brief snippets does not allow it to qualify for fair use as per long-standing common law precedent, since its goal is not to review, parody, educate, or the like; its goal is not at all transformative, but rather is pretty much identical to the original authors' intent (i.e., production of enjoyable music).

As Justice Story put in in his famous opinion in Folsom v. Marsh, "if the defendants may take three hundred and nineteen letters, included in the plaintiffs' copyright, and exclusively belonging to them, there is no reason why another bookseller may not take another five hundred letters, and a third, one thousand letters, and so on, and thereby the plaintiffs' copyright be totally destroyed."

Which is not to say anyone's going to bother suing you, or that they'd be awarded any damages if they did sue you, but it's still pretty clearly illegal. Just in case you care.
