Role Playing Games

Is everyone this snooty about it?

The only knowledge I have of tabletop RPGs is from this comic, and while the comic is funny, actually playing such a game doesn't seem like much fun to me. I'd appreciate an explanation of why you enjoy them and why I should try it, instead of "what a dumb thing to say, it's the best thing ever and I look down on you for suggesting otherwise."

The worst I did was point out/state the obvious, you are seeing personal attacks and snootiness where there is none. Your post came off as rather snooty itself. If you wanted to ask why people enjoy them because you have no experience or knowledge of them yourself then you should have said so in the first place. Instead, you made a statement that makes it sound like you completely disregard tabletop/p&p RPGs as low status and yet also make it clear you know nothing about them, kind of like the old men who claim video games cause violent gun crimes.

Didn't mean for it to be taken literally, I meant more that it seems like a LOT of work, especially for the one hosting.

Where you see work, some people see extremely rewarding world building. That being said, there are also very real methods of being a game master with very little preparation. Just think of a situation/problem, jot a few notes downs on various locations and characters, enemies, etc., throw the players in. Can be done in an hour if you choose the right system. A lot of the creative process can also be live, and in the hands of the players (cooperative story-telling basically). Unless of course you are playing it like a video game, or a competitive thing, which it isn't. Generally, yes, it will always be more work than booting up a computer game, but the small amount of "work" is worth the table-top RPG "effort" just because of the infinite freedom to do absolutely anything you want.

You're right, this is what I meant:

This doesn't even make sense.

I just started DMing a D+D game for my dad and sister, and I find it more fun than actually playing.
