Another Dumb Message
So I'm reading the book: Hannibal's Children". In it, Carthage defeats Rome in the 2nd Punic War. Rather than kill all the Romans, Hannibal offers the (apparently) ancient 3rd way: national exile. Reluctantly, the Romans accept, and they build a new nation along the Danube and Rhine.
115 years later, the Romans send a "trade" delegation southward. They find the Carthaginians preparing to invade the Ptolomaic Empire, while the Seleucids fend off the newly-appearing Parthians. Northern and cetral Italy are not directly controlled by any single nation. The Romans and Carthaginians ally, while the leader of the Roman delegation travels to Ptolemaic Alexandria to prepare the defenses of the capital. The idea is to get Carthage involved in a protracted war, making them powerless to oppose the Romans' land grab for Italy, and the sacred Seven Hills.
I think this would make a great scenario, but I'm less certain where to start it. Should it be: 1) when the Romans agree to be exiled; 2) when the Romans are about to send out the expedition; or 3) when the Romans and Carthaginians ally in preparation of the invasion of Egypt. I think the last would be least interesting, and the first hardest to pull off, but potentially the best.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
