Gothic Empire
Barbarians at the Gates

All military units gain +3 combat strength against Walls. Tile improvements pillaged by Gothic units grant +25% their typical yield. Razing cities incurs 25% less Grievances than normal and grants a boost of 500 Culture. Clearing a Barbarian Outpost has a chance of spawning an era-appropriate land military unit under your control.*

*In the Barbarian Clans game mode, this is instead changed to "All costs to treat with Barbarian Tribes are halved."
Gadrauhts
Unique Classical Era unit that replaces the Swordsman. Ignores movement and sight penalties for Woods and Rainforest. +5 combat bonus while defending in Woods, Rainforest, or on Hills, +8 if defending against cavalry-class units.
Alhs
Replaces the Shrine. +2 Faith if adjacent to Woods, +2 Production if adjacent to a Bonus Resource. Provides Tourism once Flight is researched, providing more Tourism the longer since it was built or repaired.

Theodoric
In Simulacro Romae

All City Center buildings generate +1 Culture, +2 once Cultural Heritage is discovered. When sending a Trade Route to a civilization that is further along the Civics tree, that Trade Route yields Culture equal to the difference in number of Civics between your civilizations. Sending your first Trade Route to such a civilization triggers an Inspiration for one Civic they have discovered that you have not.
Urbium Restaurator
Likes civilizations who quickly repair their cities and Districts after wars or natural disasters and always tries to keep his cities in their best shape. Dislikes civilizations who neglect such maintenance.

Theodoric, son of Theodemir, you and your fierce warriors struck fear into your enemies across Europe, civilized and barbaric alike. You took hold of Italy for yourself and united the Gothic kingdoms, rightly earning the name The Great. But, standing in the shadows of Roman greatness, you did not let the Empire fall further into ruin -- instead, you built, you restored, you gave the people bread and circuses and kept them safe with your great armies, whether Roman or Goth. Let not your legacy fall into darkness, for the Goths are not mere barbarians; show the world the skill and strength of your people, and the legends will speak of them as gloriously as any who came before.

Theodoric's Details

Religion: None?/Protestantism?/Eastern Orthodoxy? (IRL, Theodoric was Arian, the Goths' preferred flavor of Christianity. I didn't think it necessary to add yet another Christian denomination into the game, and I feel like Catholics AND ancient Goths would take offense to him being Catholic, so if you didn't want him to default to founding a random religion, presumably the other two Christian faiths could fill in. Is it accurate? No, but neither is anything about Harald Hardrada's religion in this game.)
General personality: Haughty and self-assured, but generally fairly cheery; if angered, disdainful and quick-tempered. (Expect him to physically threaten you.)

Dialogue:
Theodoric would speak a reconstructed form of the Gothic language.

Spoiler Dialogue :

Voiced Lines:

Greeting: “Theodoric stands before you, King of the Ostrogoths, King of the Visigoths, King of Italy, and restorer of Rome! Your honor and respect are more than appropriate.”

Agenda-based Approval: “A city is at its best when all of its parts are in proper working order. I can see that you understand this, for your cities truly shine.”

Agenda-based Disapproval: “You allow your cities to lie in ashes and filth as though my troops had just sacked them! Take a bit of pride in your civic appearance!”

Attacked: “The Goths stand not for such treachery, such deceit! Fortunately, we also know well how to crush it into dust.”

Declares War: “Prepare yourselves for death! The fury of the Goths is upon you!”

Defeated: “If my legend must end with me, so be it. But let my people’s legend live on in spite of your vile deeds.”

Civilopedia Quote: “An able Goth wants to be like a Roman; only a poor Roman would want to be like a Goth.”

Unvoiced Lines:

Invitation to Capital: “Ravenna is the most beautiful of cities, especially under its new ownership. You should come and see for yourself.”

Invitation to City: “Come and visit our nearest city! We’ve managed to maintain the architectural style of the Romans… or whoever happened to own it last.”

Sends Delegation: “A delegation comes to visit you. The envoys bear delicious food, the warriors fine weapons, and the priests the word of Arius, all as gifts for you.”

Accepts Delegation: “Your delegates partook in a great sparring match with my warriors, and most of them return to you with only bruises and flesh wounds!”

Rejects Delegation: “Unfortunately, I’m busy preparing for my next campaign. Perhaps another time?”

Accepts Declaration of Friendship: “Like Alaric and Athaulf, we stand as one!”

Rejects Declaration of Friendship: “The Goths must stand alone.”

Offers Friendship: “If we were to unite as one, no power in the world could stand against us!”

Player Accepts Offer of Friendship: “Wonderful! I will begin preparations for our first war together.”

Player Rejects Offer of Friendship: “This shows a lack of wisdom on your part.”

Trade Deal Accepted: “To our mutual prosperity!”

Too Many Troops Near Border: “My people will not tolerate transgressions against our hard-won home. Do I sense betrayal in your heart, friend?”

Denounced by Player: “You fool! You babbling child! Do you know whose kingdom you threaten?”

Denounces Player: “Time and again, you prove more treacherous than the Romans and more barbarous than the Huns.”

Civilization theme: Teiwis Hauheins ("Praise of Tiw")
Just as Rome's theme was based off an album that tried to recreate Roman music, so is the Goths' based off an artist's interpretation of their music! There are a lot of tracks on this album that could make for excellent ambient music once Civ-ified, but I picked Teiwis Hauheins as the main theme because I can see it building up well over time: Imagine it starting in the Ancient Era, sounding somber and mysterious on simple instruments, like you've stumbled upon a Gothic ritual in the woods, then turning into something more grand and powerful by the Industrial Era, maybe even incorporating a pipe organ to invoke a different kind of "Gothic" feel. I could even see it making that progression within one version of the song, sort of like what Gaul's theme does.

There are probably a few different ways I could've taken the Goths design-wise, and I'm not 100% sure why I chose the direction I did... actually, I know a little bit why. Culture always seemed so much harder to me to accumulate than Science, and I almost always found myself on the losing end of the Civics tree, absolutely dragging behind most other civs in terms of Civic era and Great Writers/etc. I wanted a Civ that could potentially pull ahead in that area, perhaps by force, without necessarily having to focus overmuch on Theatre Squares. The Goths just happened to fit in my mind; even if their civilization didn't last as long as Rome or Egypt or some of the others, I'd argue they still have an impact in how we (in the Anglosphere, at least) speak and think. Goths are go-to barbarians for many (even if they're misguidedly referring to people who like eyeliner, metal music, and Hot Topic), and one of their client kingdoms/fellow barbarians, the Vandals, once looted Rome so thoroughly that we still speak of vandalism. As for Theodoric, I went with him because he seemed like an interesting figure who ruled for a fair amount of time (poor Alaric, he was gone too soon after his greatest achievement), and could also arguably be said to represent both western and eastern Goths, having power over both kingdoms for a time. I found it cool how he acted, essentially, like an emperor in all but name, building and rebuilding the stuff that was damaged or left behind, making sure the people had grain and entertainment and working aqueducts, he even paid to rebuild Ravenna's synagogues after they were burnt down (his Italy seems to have been at least partly religiously tolerant)... a very benevolent leader, or at least he might have said so. He didn't even force his rule, so to speak, on the Romans - he allowed Roman law to apply to Roman citizens and Gothic law to apply to Gothic citizens (they also tended to live apart), and I can't help but wonder what the people thought of this so-called "barbarian conqueror" being so seemingly generous. Would some maybe have preferred him to the final slate of weak Roman emperors in the west?

Since Ravenna is currently a city on the Romans list, maybe you could change the name to Ravèna? That's how the Lombards spelled it. I know the Lombards and Goths are different but they both are Germanic.

I actually spent a long time looking for some Gothic spelling/alternate name for Ravenna to no avail (found Rome, of course), so thank you. I had thought maybe it wouldn't matter so much with the color distinctions and the notification that it is/was an original capital, but I too would prefer it to stand out in some way.
