Hi

I was wondering if anyone knows of a Romance of the Three Kingdoms scenario for Civ 3?

Thanks!

The closest you can get is with Civ3 Conquests. One of them is Sengoku, a warring states scenario set in feudal Japan. Hope this helps. :D

Thanks for the links. Will look. I noticed a very critical review of the TV series in one of the threads, talking about bad acting. This comes as a surprise as all the reviews I've read from Chinese are very favourable.

To address some of the concerns: The actors are all opera stars and hence their style of acting is very formal. This actually suits the show quite well as the dialogue is basically the Chinese equivalent of Shakespeare (Chinese on the mainland routinely memorise Tang dynasty poems and other classics as part of their schooling so this is no problem for them. OTOH as an overseas Chinese with no formal schooling in Chinese it gives me a headache). This also means the fighting scenes more resemble the play fighting you see in Chinese opera rather than say Braveheart. Also the battle formations like the 8 Maze Array were pulled off very well. Think of it as a huge lavish epic Shakespearan production. I see this same disconnect when non-Chinese review serious HK historical wuxia productions where the acting and dialogue are more formal and traditional than most HK movies or modern series (though much less so than the 3 Kingdoms TV). For example the 1982 HK version of Condor Heroes (another long historical epic based on a hugely popular book - this time based on the Southern Song period and the invasion of Genghis Khan) is widely praised amongst Chinese for the brilliant acting but when I show it to non-Chinese they say the acting is bad.

As for bad special effects and lack of historical accuracy...The show is actually one of the biggest budget shows in Chinese history, taking 3 years to film, with lavish sets based on historical sites and beautiful landscapes and costumes. While they differ from the books in some respects, in general it is quite close to the book. For example, I have heard many Chinese comment on how closely the actors resemble their image of the characters from the book, statues, drawings etc. Also mainland productions in general take the historical accuracy very seriously (compared to HK who throw historical accuracy out of the window). So the costumes, customs etc. is very close to the Late Han period as far as I can tell. 3 Kingdoms TV and Heroes of the Water Margin TV were huge events in China with strong elements of national pride in their making judging from comments I hear from mainlanders so historical accuracy was something they took seriously.

I think the bad special effects accusation comes from the fact that they use no CG. When they want an army they literally take several thousand soldiers from the Chinese army and dress them up. That and the lack of Hollywood know-how means that it is no-where near as slick as say LoTR. However it is magnitudes better than HK historical TV series.

The show was extremely popular in China. My mainland friends tell me when it was on at night the streets would empty so that people can go and watch it. OTOH, the accusation of bad English subtitles I can't really do anything about...And the change of actors mid-stream is also annoying.

Anyway enough about that! I just wanted to present the another POV about it. I think I'll just go and check out the scenarios now.
