I'm new to Total war, and even newer to total realism.. but I seem to have noticed a few "bad" differences when I installed total realism.. has anyone else noticed this when making the upgrade or is something else going on?

1- Units seem to run slower... I press run, and they start jogging like they are a cross country runner, not like they are a bloodthirsty savage charing at enemy lines. This kind of ties in with my second point.

2- I can't really charge enemies anymore. They just jog up to enemy lines and start engaging in hand to hand fighting while the units in the rear just wait. I want my barbarians to act barbaric again not be some slow disciplined wimps!

3- Infantry that can double as javelins refuse to melee until they are out of spears or unless the enemy engages in hand to hand combat first... so frustrating!

4- My generals seem to be falling left and right.. I used to be able to charge through an enemy flank with heavy cavalry and trample everyone.. now not only do they just engage in swordfights and not trample but it seems like the general is always one of the first guys to go, and then everyone ends up routing since I also lose the cavalry charge advantage.

5- Units are not following my orders, I will tell them to go inside a town's walls when I take down the gate. But instead, they act like they are in a military parade and set up a whole formation on the outside of the town and don't ever go inside the wall. I have to repeatedly click inside they city for them to finally get the point that I want themt o go in. This also happens when I am fighting, if I have another enemy unit coming at me from another side, I will use a unit to attack that one.. but instead they decidet hey want to continue atttackign the enemy they were attacking before. Even though they can't even reach it because they are in a hand to hand battle with another unit. This ends up in me getting my ass handed to me...

6- Buildings and units are costing more. Buildings also seem to take more turns.. come on!

7- The eternal wait at the end of each turn for each faction to make its moves... Honestly it is a killer, I am spending more time waiting for factions to play their moves than I am actually in game.

Off the top of my head these are just the things I can remember.. Has anyoen else noticed this? Is it normal? I'm th inking of just going back to regular total war. Oh well, the many new units seemed nice.. so did the new factions.. even though I guess that in itself is a problem (number 7)

I had similar complaints, actually. But for 3, you can make your javelin-clad units engage in melee by pressing alt. The cursor should change to a sword and then right click. And the wait at the end of a turn is terrible too. Can't it be more like Civ? Almost instant?

1,2,3, and 5 happens in the regular game also.
4. The cavalry's attack is weakened.
6. Its supposed to be more realistic. Romans didn't just recruits soldiers right after they capture a city.
7. Turn off follow AI movements.
You can get other mods here

. .. .. .. . it! I've just about had it up to here!
I'm going to uninstall and just play regular rome total war.
If I'm playing a game I want to be having fun, not on the verge of breaking my desk in half!

The battle system has been completely killed in my eyes, and the campaign mode is just a huge drag with the never ending period while the other factions take their turns.
Oh well at least now I can say I tried :)

Have you tried other mods?

These changes presumably were made in response to perceived problems with the game. For instance, many people complained about units moving too quickly and cavalry being too powerful, so movement speeds and unit stats were edited to achieve a more satisfactory outcome. I guess you either like the changes or you don't. In my RTR experience (with Gold and not Platinum, if that makes a difference), cavalry were still very powerful, as long as you managed to hit a unit on the flank or in the rear.

5- Units are not following my orders, I will tell them to go inside a town's walls when I take down the gate. I don't think the combat and pathfinding AI were accessible to modders, so I doubt any changes were made here. I don't know if RTR changes the circumstances of siege assaults to make things more problematic or not, so I don't know why you're having this problem in RTR but not the regular game.

You're right about the charge being weakened, and it took me a wee while to get used to. It is, as stated before, a response to the vanilla game speed (cavalry were horrific, IIRC). I'm quite used to it by now.

3- Infantry that can double as javelins refuse to melee until they are out of spears or unless the enemy engages in hand to hand combat first... so frustrating!

Hold down alt-key and click where you want them to attack. This comes from vanilla Rome.

I would argue that you shouldn't be using your generals in battle anyway, except as a last resort. The risk of losing one outweighs whatever benefit two dozen heavy cavalry units can give in battle.

5- Units are not following my orders, I will tell them to go inside a town's walls when I take down the gate. I don't recall having seeing this, and my troops quite happily march where they're told.

I have had problems with units disengaging a unit they're fighting to attack another, but that usually depends on the direction of their new attack. Try 'pulling back' a bit then moving them into attack. I can't imagine troops wanting to ignore an angry enemy directly in front of them in order to engage someone else far away.

6- Buildings and units are costing more. Buildings also seem to take more turns.. come on!

Pick and choose what you need in the early game - have some cities focus on troops while other work on the economy. As you enter the mid-game earning money won't be that big a problem, nor will waiting the turns for the more powerful units.

7- The eternal wait at the end of each turn for each faction to make its moves... Honestly it is a killer, I am spending more time waiting for factions to play their moves than I am actually in game.

This could be a computer problem - Rome is already a big game without having a massive mod on top. Switch off AI Movements, and if it's still a problem then I would agree that the mod should go. I have a huge problem with turns that take a long time to complete :)

Slightly off-topic: Ironically I find Medieval 2 a lot smoother to run than even vanilla Rome.

I'm actually having quite a lot of fun with Total Realism,as others can clearly see. Best thing I can see is the fact Britain doesn't conquer half of Europe before I'm out of Italy.

That said, I do miss having a big old fashioned Roman Civil War at the endgame :D

I'm not talking about EB.
Maybe Ofuh will like Darthmod or Chivalry: Total War.
Just pointing out the EB, one of the most popular mods isn't such a good one for him.

Do generals have one hp in RTR or am I thinking about EB?
Probably RTR, in EB generals are the best! Even if they do in EB, most generals get Hale and Hearty and Man Grown(+1 HP each)

I would argue that you shouldn't be using your generals in battle anyway, except as a last resort. The risk of losing one outweighs whatever benefit two dozen heavy cavalry units can give in battle
I disagree. The chance of your general dieing is incredibly low, unless you run him into a bunch of spears. Plus having your general fight gives him good traits. Though in EB, I tend to get a lot of generals who are hypochondriacs, so I keep them out of battle.

I still use the general in battle - just when I know he will survive. Usually this is at the end when the enemy is in retreat, or enemy units are engaged with another of my units and I can use the general to flank. Otherwise I keep him back :)

ARGH! I wish i had known about the answer to #3 before! I was always annoyed by that. Thanks!

I realize calvalry are a bit strong in vanilla, but does anyone know how to edit the speed? In the 4th Age mod the calvalry is too slow when marching and charging for me to stand.

I've never been a fan of RTR... too many provinces, battles too long. Its an impressive mod none the less.

I want more provinces, though in RTW vanilla the provs are okay but in M2 the vanilla map sucks. And I just am not happy with any of the 3 mods I've tried.

Anyone know other bigs mods like RTR that improve realism but also FUN (And DON'T increase build times and costs by very much)

What mods did you play?

For m2: Road to Jerusalem (unpatched M2)

1.2 Patch m2:
The Long Road (I liked it, except for that it's bloody tedious, 6 turns to build a road, over a 1000 gold to build a woodcutter! BLOODY HECK!)

Stainless Steel (havn't played it much yet, and I just found out that 4.0 was released eysterday... dangnamit, now I have to download it again)

Also, I can't play RTR sicne it doesn't work for v1.6 of RTW...

You can get RTR Platinum, but I doubt you would like it. IIRC, there is a mod that just adds more provinces for M2TW, but I can't remember the name.
