Sorry to bring this up but its frustrating the s*** out of a few of us. A group of my friends wish to play over the net, since we are spread across australia. One of my friends and his girlfriend cannot join the games created they keep timing out. (Once u get to the stage where u see the game and join once they hit the join button they time out. Just to clarify)
Now they are behind a dsl504 router with all the correct ports open listed in the readme file. We have even tried to use the DMZ to no effect.
I've successfully hosted a game over the net already with ppl I dont know from the lobby, so that rules out my end for the issue. Now these days my mate can't even join me without timimg out is there something we are missing. Will my mates girlfriend be able to join from the Lan because they are in the same room using the same router or is it easier for him to host and for her to connect via lan? Or should she try to connect via the net? Has anyone else suffered at this inability to get 2 ppl to connect to a game from behind the same router? Even if he hosts i cant join him and neither can she. Obviously its a port issue, but boys and girls i'm running outa hair so for god sake give an old man a hand .....

Just to get to your paranoid-delusional side (we've all got one), check this out. We used to (key words 'used to') be able do the disk jockey thing; booting up on one pc then switching the disk to the other and booting that up and playing for hours. We didn't even have what some on this forum have referred to as the 'disk check' problem where the program randomly checks for the disk presence, sees none, then exits the game. Our problems began recently (as apparently most of the others with this very - or similar - problem have reported).

If we've all had this problem begin recently, there most likely is a common cause. Wouldn't you agree?

Assuming that we've all got our LAN issues straight (which we apparently do, since we can file/print share and internet connection share) and we can play other MP games (QuakeIII, UT2K, etc) with no issues, then something about the game itself may have changed. I think we can rule out the data on the game CD changing in some way since it is of course ROM (and ruling out alien intervention) and ROM generally just becomes inaccessible, it doesn't arbitrarily change.

But what about the patch? Unless we'd saved it from an earlier download (say, months ago), who's to say that it hasn't changed in some way recently. I'm thinking 'intentionally changed' here, ok? Atari (the RECENT new owner of the Civ games) may not like the fact that the game was initially shipped with this "flaw". A flaw that update patches haven't fixed up to this point.

So, let's say they decide to fix this little problem by amending patch v1.27 (and it's Euro counterpart), the one that EVERYBODY downloads, right? They don't make a new patch because word would get around that patch v1.3x sucks and won't let you play on multiple CD's using one disk anymore.

How's that for paranoia? And remember, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're NOT out to get you!

I realize this is a stretch, but I'm only trying to find the common denominators here and there only seems to be a few.

THOUGHTS? COMMENTS? ANYBODY?

Hello,

We are having the same issue of not being able to play from behind the same router. We have 2 XP machines, 2 c3c disks, a linksys router and no hair left from all the different variations of attempts we have made:

1) Opened & Closed DMZ
2) Direct IP
3) LAN
4) Internet
5) One of us and neither of us hosting
6) coming into either the staging or setup screens
7) having one person in the game before the next person enters
8) and more variations than are worth listing here....

The point is, we have tried everything we can think of with the net result being the following:

If one person from behind the router hosts and someone from outside the router is in the game, we can see each other in the staging screen. Once we get to the setup screen, when the other person behind the router comes in, he seems to 'kick' the other player(s) out (which to them looks like the host cancelled the game).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tigress and pals
