Hi Folks, sorry if this has been asked and answered, but doing a search on "runtime error" Produces massive ## of hits.

This has been happening with occasional regularity, but now has hit "critical" - at least on one game.

This is how is usually goes:

Playing along.... I've got a LOT of the map discovered. Very late in the game - mid-to-late 1900s Usually when I am scanning around to decide what to do next, al of a sudden, the program dies. There is an EMPTY dialog box with a button (sometimes it says "OK"). Press that and get another dialog box. This one is wider and not as tall. It has an "OK" button. Almost never is there any text in either of these. Once or twice, there was something about graphics and "reducing" something or other.

The desktop is "hashed" at this point, but that clears up by dragging the "my documents" folder around...

Usually, I can restart from the last save point and get through to the end.

Last night, similar scenario, although not as far along in the game. (Early 1600s). Got a Blue Screen (not the BSOD, as there was no text) and had to reboot. Click on the auto save game and Civ4 started up. But immediately upon bringing up the map to where I could see my game, it ended, with the usual 2 empty dialog boxes.

Help??!!

I am fairly PC literate, but not so PC technical. (I'm a mainframe geek.) So, I will look up and modify stuff - if you explain how. (Not "change your color settings", but "go to ____. Click on _____. "Change the xyz to abc"...)

Thanks!!

Which version of Civ4 are you playing? The original Civ4 (vanilla), Civ4 Warlords or Civ4 BTS? Have you ever patched it and if so to which version?

Vanilla. I've patched it to the current (1.74?) patch. DirectX 9.0c.

This used to happen OCCASIONALLY (like 1/month) and now it happens ALWAYS. If I play for more than a few minutes, it happens.

Looking at your original post I wonder if perhaps your graphics card is playing up. It might be worth be worth reducing your graphics settings to reduce the load on the card. You can reduce the graphics settings by going into Advanced from the main screen, selecting Options and then selecting the Graphics tab.

It may be that the card is overheating. This might be because of insufficient ventilation in the PC case or perhaps the graphics card fan is clogged up.
