Does anybody have any idea whatsoever as to how i can run SMAC under Win2000 - ive tried a plain install (min coz i have no HDD left), and when i try to run it, it just doesnt start (not even the intro).

I meet all the system reqs. - i can run it under WinMe on the same system, but would rather run it under 2000.

Thanks in advance.

Hmm, I have no problems running SMAC on win2k. You may need to download compatibility patch , here is the link:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/tools/appcompat/default.asp

I know, though, that many people have trouble running SMAC on win2k, because of video or sound card , or even mouse drivers. If patch doesnt help, I would suggest to read posts in newsgroup:

"alt.games.firaxis.alpha-centauri"

There is lots of info about win2k problems.
You can access it using this link:

Search only in this group for "win2k". I just searched and it brings tons of info.
Hope this helps:)

I've been looking for the above information for awhile. Need ot check it out when I get home from work. Does anyone know if Alien Crossfire will work on win2k too?

SMAC is my favorite of the Civilization family but when I upgraded to win 2000 I couldn't play it and had to go buy Civ 3.

Still miss SMAC, though.

Jinglehopper - and anybody else really. Said I'd post back when I got round to trying that stuff mentioned - a bit remiss of me really coz i've only just had the time to post. It didn't work for me - if you can get it to go, please say how. Until then, its back to using SMAC on Me.

Also, you may have more luck with X-fire - its a newer game after all!

Steerpike, I did end up getting X-fire to work using the link listed by Gargantua above. I guess that you might have some issues with your video card and win 2k. Have you tried updating your drivers?

Ah well - thats an interesting one. I have a slightly "strange" card in my computer - it is apparently an ATI Rage 128 Mobility AGP 4x - according to ATI, they don't do drivers for it because it is meant to be a laptop chipset - strange that I've got it in my desktop. Still, I'm hopefully going to be able to buy a Geforce 4 card soon. However, if you have any ideas about my Rage, I'm more than willing to give them a go.
