Does anyone know just what triggers the 'Sail to the New World - West' for ships departing from the Europe screen? Usually I explore the map and send a trading ship round one of the poles and at some stage my ships are allowed to sail to the West Coast. However in my current game both poles are blocked by ice and although I had fully explored the continent I still didn't get that second option for my ships.
Eventually I sent a carpenter to the West Coast and built a Caravel and sailed it to the Western sea lanes. Only then was I able to send ships there from Europe. I did find there was a large island off the West Coast - perhaps the game was waiting for me to explore that before deciding I had finally reached the Pacific Ocean?
