SAM-01 Smoke and Mirrors

Thanks for the save Norvin. Very appropriate shot of the red planet there.

I'm definitely in for SAM-02 and I do think we should move up to Emperor. Variants, I don't really care either way personally. No Slavery was Dave's idea and it's kind of a shame to do it when he's not around to participate.

Maybe we could mess around with the climate, like play a Great Plains map or one of those crazy tundra/ice maps. Or a massive jungle? I dunno. I could just as easily play a normal no-variants game.

I'm still a little busy for the next week and a half but I am around to comment, just might not be able to play an actual set yet (if the game even starts by then).

The no slavery idea was Dave's (I tried it on emperor and it was tough) so I'm more than ok on skipping that idea. If we decide to move to emperor than I think we should just play it straight up. Even though the resources were scarce and scattered in this game we had tons of land to grab which as we all know makes things somewhat easier. Factor in the early religious harmony which let us expand and build more or less at our own pace and we were in great shape. So it seems like you guys would like to pick a certain map type and move up a level. There was no mention of a leader preference so I was going to throw a game together later. Random leader and whatever map we can agree on (I have no preference). I can roll some starts later and post for 2-3 other players and we can start our discussion.

Sounds good. I don't have any real preference with regards to map though I do have a soft spot for those all-plains ones. Tectonics is sometimes like that, Great Plains is obviously as well. They do nerf the AI quite a bit, though (unless they get all the grasslands), so it might just end up feeling like Monarch instead of Emperor. And it might also end up being a bit similar to the map we just played since it wasn't heavy on food or grasslands either.

Yeah basically I don't care either way! I'm easy to please.

edit: oh yeah, as for leaders... personally I am trying to avoid Creative and Organized leaders in my singleplayer games since I've found that the game is too easy for me with those traits (at least on Emperor). I have trouble with Philosophical so I wouldn't mind one of those. Maybe Sitting Bull or Suleiman? Or Alex?

Oops, yeah, No Slavery was Dave's idea. Emperor sounds good to me.

Map-wise, since Norvin has no preference and it sounds like Glare wants something dry? I'm not that familiar with the climate controls in Civ IV, but is it possible to make a plainsy Terra map as a compromise?

Guess no one favored the "name-our-civilization" idea, eh?

I'm up for it, sure. It doesn't really affect our choice of map/leader, though. I don't have to have a dry map or anything, the one we just played was relatively dry I would say. But I think it's nice sometimes to have a map that's heavily tilted towards a certain climate. I did a game once on a map that was nothing but ice and tundra - I'm talking neverending icy forested hills, with maybe a deer or a fish resource somewhere. That was interesting (though to be fair I chickened out and went for a lame one-city AP victory rather than try to expand and grow).

Just an idea, though, as I said I am absolutely fine with any map; also needs to be said that these unusual maps can be extra difficult and we are moving up in difficulty already.

Terra is also fine with me, I've never played it actually.

In Terra maps everyone is crowded together on one piece of land and there is another piece (continent) where the barbarians get a strong foothold. It makes for early and often warring more often than not but you also need to be able to set sail for the "New World" or you will fall behind. I'm fine with the renaming thing too (although from my reports you can tell that I'm not all that creative). I'll set this up in a little bit so we can start fishing for our new players.
