Hi,

I have played about 5 or 6 games now using the Play Now option. I randomise my civ. However, I seem to keep getting the same enemies - English, Americans, Mongolians, Aztecs, Spanish, Russians. Never seen the Japs or some of the other races. Is that just bad luck or should I use the customise game option?

go to the custom game menu option and you can pick your opponets.

Customize. You can leave it set to randomize your opponents or pick specific ones, and choose the number of opponents you want. There are a wide variety of other controls there, too, that would be worth your investigation. :)

Just bad luck. I always play with random options and all civs come up now and then.

I noticed I always seemed to get the same AI opponents all the time back in Civ III--and the case holds true now in Civ IV. I'm pretty sure that it happens because it's preset or something for each civ/leader combination. I'm willing to bet you play as the same civ/leader a lot; am I right, WilberDaForce?

Try this--go start a huge map, normal speed game via Play Now as Saladin. Your opponents will be Montezuma, Qin Shi Huang, Elizabeth, Frederick, Tokugawa, Kublai Khan, Julius Caesar, Peter, Ghandi, and Washington. Also note that I only specified huge maps on normal speed because that's what I play, so I don't know if changing those settings will make a difference or not.

When it gets right down to it, though: play as a random civ, or only play custom games.

In my last five games (with random civs), I always manage to find myself next to Montezuma and Hatty. Hatty is a nice neigbour but I am constantly laying the smackdown on Monty. I may just have to pick my opponents next game although it does kind of ruin the surprise.
