Save System Screwed Me Over!

My girlfriend and I had a great game going - we were having a ton of fun - I have my autosaves set to every 10 turns with 100 saved (so 1000 saved turns, or so I thought) - my GFs computer is set to 2 turns 100 save game slots.

Side note, the save system in multiplayer is the worst I have ever seen, and I've played games since the DOS era. Firaxis should be ashamed at the state of multiplayer in general, and this specifically.

Skip ahead a bit, the game is auto saved, and my friends come over.

We all play Civ for about 100 turns, then quit for the night.

Tonight, I go to load my GF and my saved game, AND OUR AUTO SAVE IS WIPED OUT. Sure it saved the throw away game I had with my friends, but the other game is GONE!

I have 1000 GB on my hard drive, I set it to save once every 10 turns maximum 100 saves, I should be able to save 1000 game turns.

I am furious, I will have to do some hack crap like save the game with ctrl+s and then move it into another directory, rename it, and maybe I will be able to have more than one game of Civ going at a time.

THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE IN 2010! I have had my night RUINED by this.

The save game system is pathetic, whoever was responsible for it should be fired.

I just wasted more of my time posting this - I just wanted to vent, and maybe let someone out there know what a garbage save system this game has.

When an action as simple as saving a game ends up ruining a customer's opinion of a product there is something wrong.

Ctrl + s if I remember correct.

I always manually save my MP game when we stop (we play marathon games which take several sessions). Then I copy the savegame in a dedicated folder where I keep my savegames, and when I want to continue that game I copy it back to the default folder.

Never had any problems.

So, shouldn't your girlfriend still have a functioning save file?

No, it wiped out her saves and my saves because we both started a new game and so all the auto saves from our game was gone.

You know you can save the game manually when you stop playing?

Next time read the post before you comment:

I KNOW I can do that, now, I didn't at the time. The point is I shouldn't have to, it is 2010... this is pathetic design.

Thanks, could be useful.

Well yes it's crappy design... But at least this one has a simple workaround...

Im still trying to get my custom scenarios available in MP over Lan... Or trying to get Hamachi to work...

You can actually load those CTRL S save games? Because I tried saving that way from the beginning but I could never load the games because they don't show up in the list, and I'm stuck with auto saves. Steam Cloud saves don't even work. I've given up playing for the past month or two until they start fixing multiplayer.

I think you have to overwrite the autosave file with the manual save or move the save file to the autosave folder.

Also within the auto save folder I believe there is an 'oldauto' or some such folder, meaning you can go back at least one game prior without losing the other game, as the OP experienced.

Edit: oh and to load up an MP save you have to drop it in the MP saves folder, I think it's as simple as that.

After control-S ing the file, rename it AutoSave(...) and put it in the /multi/auto folder. If you plan to play other mp games before, put it in another folder. When you are ready, put the file back in the /multi/auto folder. Otherwise, autosaves will be erased and used for the current game. Can be in the /multi/prev folder but just to be sure make a copy of the file after renaming it.
