Savegame error: DataIO operation System Error: CITY

Oh great! So not only is there a DATA IO CITY and DATA IO UNIT error, but also the one that I have got DATA IO TILE.

I dont know if it is related, but it has twice happened after I have installed a mod. Once for the Wonder Splash screens and again for the Build Queue. Each time my last savegame wouldn't load and gave the DATA IO TILE error.

Rather puts me off playing anymore, knowing I can invest 10+ hours in a game and then have it stopped dead, especially as Autosave doesn't seem to work on my machine, even though it is checked in prefs.

I hate this! What kind of game has an error where a settler is killed on a transport and your game is ruined?! What the **** is up with that?! I had the same thing happen to me and i thought my computer was gonna blow up or some crap like that. What company in their right mind would discourage people from buying their product by not testing properly?! If all these people have had this problem, myself included, then why was it not seen if thourough testing was done? Plain out, Firaxis, and Infof***ing crappy "grames" can kiss my ***. All I did was have a settler on a galley on it's way to colonize a new continent, a likely thing to do right? Then the boat sinks and my game is lost. what the h*** does a settler on a boat have to do with all the city graphics not being able to load? But most importantly, WHEN THE F**K IS THIS GOING TO BE FIXED!!!!?????

Let's all take a DEEP breath and CHILL  You're welcome to express your opinions, but please do it in civil manner. Such inflammatory tripe will not be tolerated.

UPDATE: MummyMan has been given a weeks holiday for his efforts.

Ooooooohh, that will hurt him like hell ... Sorry, but I guess Fireaxis has to live with this comments. They ****** it up and they ******* up twice, because there is still no patch available for download.

But wait: Now I understand what will happen: Not only we have
to pay for multiplayer "addon" (aka Civ3 Gold), no, I bet Marketing thought to be very funny and we will find the "now allows saving your game" version in three weeks @ebworld.com. It takes some time to layout the cover and press the cd's.

... I recently installed Civ3 on a HP Pavilion w/Celeron 400mhz processor, 128mb RAM ... meeting the minimum requirements except for a Celeron instead of a Pentium II ... my HD is 40gb, divided into partitions using Partition Magic ... my OS is on C: with Civ3 located on the Games partition F: ... there are no programs running in the background except Norton Anti-Virus and Volume Control ... I know the HP's have had problems with the onboard video cards, but even if I need a new driver, I can't imagine that problem creating the severity of the problem I experienced

... the game ran beautifully the first few times I tried it out - standard map, 4 or 8 civs - nothing too taxing, although, as the game progressed (1250 AD or so) I did notice a lag between turns which seemed a bit much ... then I tried to save a game ... the game crashed, locking up my PC ... but I rebooted and all was well ... or so I thought

... the next game I played went well until I tried to save again ... the PC crashed, but this time, it corrupted my Windows 98 SE files, evidently destroying the registry and corrupting many of the system files, making it impossible to reboot the system properly

... I had to reformat the HD and reinstall Windows ... I reinstalled the game - and played it again ... everything went smoothly, playing for two hours, no noticeable lag ... then, when I tried to save ... same thing - PC lockup, no OS, damaged registry - meaning another reformat and reinstallation

... I run other games on this machine without any similar problems, although none of them - to my knowledge - use DirectX 8

... is anyone else having this problem? what's causing this mess? any ideas on a solution?

yeah, me too. i am tired of this sh!t. the last 3 games i bought, all had serious issues, and were obviously pushed out the door, and not properly tested. civ3 is the last game i am buying. $50 for this sh!t is rediculous. if the corperations want to rip me off, i can do the same to them. fu<k 'em, this is BS. i cant scroll, i cant save, i cant precision bomb, i cant defend against air raids, and it has memory leaks...this is completely unplayable nonsense.

I'm at your side.
It also piss me off to loose my time because of realy bad work.
I had a different corruption error, is says DataIO operation System Error: **** (I don't remember the exact phrase but it was not a real word).
I do not know what was corrupting this game but I was at war with the French and Russia was at my side. We were at the virge of success when I went to sleep. I was really pissed off, so I deleted all savegames (even that working one 200 years ago), so I can not look at the error. But I'm sure, it will come back to me with my new civ!!!!!!

I have had this happen with a game that i have been playing for about two weeks, so i don't want to hear you people complaining about losing 3 hours of time.

the only way to solve it, i would say, would be to actually pay attention to the game. if you notice a civ has no cities, but has not been destroyed by some "rampaging" civ, give the civ a city in your borders, destroy the ship and then recapture the city. so you lose the improvements in the city... use one of those cities everyone has up in the tundra where you can't develop a city over 5...

anyways, that's just the solution i'll continue to use unil the patch. i'm pissed off, but the game is still fun, so i'll play it with the bug...

I just want to tell all you waiting for the patch that Civ3CopyTool v0.73.5 and later can correct the corrupt files.

Do as follows:
1. Download and extract the tool. You may need to get VB5 runtimes and two OCX-controls
2. Run the tool with the option /sge to start the editor (faster then to start the CopyTool first)
3. Load the corrupt SAV and save it (in another name).

Thank you Gramphos! All hail him! I have been plagued by the CITY error for weeks! Everytime i got close to completing a game it was lost! I got the game the first day it came out and have not even been able to complete a single game! I have terribly bad luck! Anyway i'm going to go play the game that i lost. Thanks again Gramphos! I haven't downloaded anything that has been this easy to use!

I have been getting loads of TILE errors too but in a slightly different way. When I have been loading games up because of crashes (of which there have been many) the save games seem to be corrupt it's as if the game crashing is corrupting a previously saved game, anyone had anything like this?

P.S. Gramphos will the CopyTool work for my TILE error saved games?

I have looked into this problem further and I have now updated the code so that, once the patch is available, you will be able to load your corrupted saves -- but only if you are getting the DataIO CITY error.
(Note that Dan's earlier post contrary to this was correct at the time of his post -- I've only recently made this change).

Hi, Mike.

Is there a solution to the problem?
My daughter gave me this game 3 or 4 years ago, Christmas, I believe.
I have never had this problem before.

Seems I got my wires crossed, folks. Saves that are affected by this bug probably will not work with the patch. If you have an autosave that is good that was saved before the bug corrupts the save data, the patched executable will fix the problem and prevent the savegame from being corrupted.

Sorry for the mistake
