how-do-I-ues-other-peoples-saves?
Once-I-dowload-them,I-put-the.sav-into-the-save-folder-in-the-civ--folder
when-I-open-up-the-game,and-try-to-load-that-.sav,it-gives-me-an-error-message
Is-it-a-mac-thing?
and-when-It-starts-to-load-Civ-3-quits-and-i-get-a-Datal0-error

In vanilla you need to put them in Civ3/Saves unless you are using Mac file dialogs. But if you *do* use Mac file dialogs you'll have trouble with PC saves, as they have to have the Type and Creator set, and they must have the .SAV extension in upper case.

If you are trying to load PtW or Conquests file then they give error messages. Vanilla can only read vanilla files created by Civ3 the same or older than it's own version.

whoops!-sorry-wrong-thread-can-you-move-this-to-the-civ3-mac-section

Moderator Action: Will do. I'll edit my Civ4-related response as well, since it's irrelevant, now :(

"Please" would be kinda nice :p

What file dialogs are you using? Mac or Civ3-native?

The point is that you can choose whether to use Mac file dialogs or Civ3 dialogs for opening and saving games. As you didn't answer the question, I'll assume you haven't found the option yet, and you are using the default Civ3 dialogs.

Most of my saves are from GOTMs, as I don't play any other games. They all require the GOTM mod to be installed, so I've started a new game with no mods. Here it is ...

Darn!I-still-get-an-error-message
it-says-EMAG-Datal0-error
and-how-to-I-change-my-dialogue?

That EMAG error means there's a byte reversal problem. It's actually trying to read a tag that should contain 'GAME' and getting it the wrong way round. The save I sent you was created on a Mac Pro. It certainly looks OK. I've re-expanded it, and rechecked it in a hex editor, and I've reloaded it in Civ3 vanilla running on a G4 Mac.

Can you start a new game using your software, and make a manual save. 4000 BC would be OK. Attach it to a post here and I'll look at it tomorrow to see if I can understand what's different about your software.

PS. You change the way you load and save games by holding down the Command key as you start up Civ3. That gives you a dialog where you can change your screen resolution and do a few other tweaks. One is to change to Mac file dialogs.

PPS. Please let me know what Civ3 version number you see in the bottom left corner of the main menu screen.

As I said above: "Vanilla can only read vanilla files created by Civ3 the same or older than its own version." Version 1.21g cannot read files created by version 1.29.

I'm not sure where the byte reversal is coming from that's implied by the error message, but I can confirm that I get the same error here if I try to use 1.21g to open the file I uploaded.

Your best bet if you want to load other people's saves is to upgrade to version 1.29b2 using the updater in my sig. You can upgrade a copy of the entire Civ3 folder if you want to keep version 1.21g to use with the editor.
