Say NO to future techs

But we have historically done more than just go to the moon--after all that was 35 years ago. The Hubble Telescope could boost scientific research or the International Space Station could improve the builder's rep with each civ by one step excepting those at war with the builder.

The ISS should be included, though not in the way you say (as I deplore anything that alters the AI. The AI should be a simulation of a human opponent, and a human opponent would not treat you more nicely because you had the ISS). Each civ could build a different part (sort of like a Small Wonder called "ISS Part"). There'd have to be some way to deal with dissident civs who refuse to build their part and thus ruin the project (a UN vote, perhaps?). And when it's completed... all the leaderheads sit in a circle and sing "Kumbaya" together! No, seriously, I have no idea what it should do (Space Race, perhaps?), but someone should figure that out.

What about GPS instead of an ISS.
GPS is a wonderous thing. It could reveal all of the map, those black spots get on my nerves sometimes, and also increase all unit movement by 1, simulating how they now know the best way to get from point a to point b.
Perhaps, even, instead of GSP you coudl just have it called a "satilite network". You build a small wonder of a control center.. then you build each differant type of sat you'd like to have in different cities. Say you need 15 GPS sats.. or any number really, to be able to get a "GPS" bonus.. whole map revealed +1 Mvnt to units. YOu coudl also build TelCom sats that would decrease corruption, or maybe unhapiness, and ofcourse spy sats to look in on enemy cities (free investigate city, recon square) this could be linked to a right click on an emey city, or on a sqaure.
Also, i'd like to have this as a pre req for building you're SDI small wonder.
Furthermore, you should be able (with smart weapons and satilites) be able to build an anti-satalite missle. It'd cost a little bit less than an ICBM (because it'd have to be orbital). once built, when it is active you launch it by hitting the "a" key, and a little pop up box would appear with a civ name drop down and a type drop down. You pick the civ and the type of sat of theirs you'd like to shoot at and you've got a 75-80% chance of hitting that sat. Granted that'd take a few clicks, but it'd be a good way of taking down a civ's ssat network.. which if it happened today woudl be a very, very bad thing for anyone.
Say taking out a civ's telcom sats would cause unhapiness (to quote the simpsons: No TV and No beer make homer something..something.) taking out a civs GPS would negate the movement bonus, taking out a civs spy sats would cause him to loose all his recon abilities/investigate abilities, and for every SDI sat you take down, it increases the % chance of your ICBM or Tac nuke to penetrate and hit it's target.

I too hate the black spots. When I'm scouting about with a warrior I just CAN'T leave one of those spots, even if it means I have to take a bit of a roundabout way. But hey, by the time you'd get GPS, there usually aren't any black spots left anyway, not even on the ocean.

I still haver black spots evenwhen i'm researching future tech, well sometimes. stupid black spots

But we already have some future stuff in the game. Neither "Cure for Cancer", SETI or "SDI" has been built yet, and we don't quite have the technology for it. Think about it, sending colonists to Alpha Centauri is probably waaay ahead in the future.

I wouldn't mind some more very near future techs, as long as it's something that we can expect withing a couple of years, the game extends to 2050 after all. No Giant deth robots, gravtanks or ftl. Better versions of some trooptypes (like the super troopers the US will be able to field within 10-20 years), currently being constructed wonders, maybe a moonbase or a Mission to Mars would be ok to.

I didn't read anything at all here, but let me say this :

Why not bring them back and THEN make youn able to say no to the futur techs ? Options baby, Options.....

I personally would like an entire future age, but that's just me. I'll settle for a more futuristic modern age.

I think future techs should remain in the game (I don't like an abrupt-ending tech tree, and I don't like the wasted science that so much time and resources were spent to build), but it definitely needs to be seriously revamped (I also don't like spending all of those resources on something that just increases my score by 5, with no in-game benefits). I like the concept of future techs simply representing the future, rather than creating sci-fi like or unrealistic/uncertain made-up future techs.

My proposal would be to create several different future tech categories that can be researched and produce subtle, but distinct, in-game advantages; each category could be researched so many levels deep.

Note: Full proposal moved to new thread at Proposal for Revamped Future Techs.... The full proposal, including details of categories and benefits, can be found there. Please post any replies directly relating to this proposal there.

fitchn,

I like it. Particularly if there's no chance you'd be able to get through all of them (unless you cheated or played at a ridiculously low level as a superstar player). Would you be able to trade them?

New future techs with enhancements mean that somewhere farther in the future you will have unknown future techs anyway... maybe it is better to leave future techs with some generic improvement like score.

this could be an option that way it allows the player to choose, at a certain date , aliens appear and begin to colonize the planet?? its just an option, actually sounded better before I typed it out here lol

Actually SETI has been around for a long time. It just hasn't found anything yet that we know of. :borg:
